Turn off Wireless

Can anyone help.

My 16 year old connects to my broadband connection with her laptop which is fine but I don't want her on the internet after a certain time in the evening as she is evil in the morning due to having such a late night. Is there anyway I can disconnect her from my p.c. and then reconnect again in the morming.

Assuming you are using a wireless router, you can just switch that off-however then you won't be able to use it either after that time!
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Some routers do have time restrictions but probably not the type you have. Suggest you chnage the password at a time you find suitable and let them have the password and change it as and when you want.

    Thanks guys

Believe me . feel like throwing it out the window. Have just descovered the on/ off switch on router
After a day of her slobbing on the sofa and refusing to do any housework her face was a picture when it wouldn't work anymore.

Feel really sadistic but its made my day

In a technology war, the young and cunning will eventually defeat the old and virtuous.

There ought to be a better solution...

Your victory may be short-lived, as it can't be too long before she discovers the on/off switch as well...you could always unplug the router and take it to bed with you though.

  • Most routers have the functionality to restrict access to the internet between certain times of day. I just checked my Linksys router and it definitely has this function, I remember my previous Netgear router had the same.

All you need to do then is set the administrator password to stop her undoing the restriction.

What sort of router do you have?

My D-Link DI-254 does too. This certainly seems the most secure way of doing it, as well as not preventing the OP from using the Internet on her own PC. Plus, it's automatic.

This is the best route, which kids will struggle to get round (make sure they don't know your router password)

    Setup an account at OpenDNS

Change the DNS settings on your wireless router to point to OpenDNS's server

    Setup restrictions via OpenDNS website
