Problems with AOL

I've had AOL broadband internet for over 3 years but in the last two months my computer has been running like a pig. Around 6pm every evening I get the message AOL NOT RESPONDING and the computer just freezes up. After a couple of minutes of the large hourglass symbol, it unfreezes but is prone to freezing for a few minutes for the rest of the evening.

This only ever happens in the evenings, and people have told me it's down to a poor performance by AOL rather than my computer.

Has anyone else had this difficulty with them? I'm just thinking of scrapping AOL and going with another provider.

Thanks makeandsave. Do you think it's specific to AOL? I'm getting fed up with it happening every evening and will definitely switch if it's down to AOL.

When you say you use IE do you mean you just search with the internet explorer?

Sorry, not very informed where these things are concerned!!

Try surfing with a decent browser like Firefox, if it is faster then you know it is AOL's rubbish interface software and not your broadband connection that is at fault.
What speed are you supposed to be getting? Check your speed on here:

Thanks macman. Haven't got a clue what speed I'm supposed to be getting, but I'm often left waiting 10 minutes for the damn thing to unfreeze!! I swear it was quicker - when it freezes up - to use dial up when we had it!!!

Well what AOL tariff are you on, that should enable you to find out your theoretical speed? If you're not getting what you are paying for, contact AOL and get them onto it.
But I would test your linespeed on another browser first to see where the problem lies.

We're having trouble with AOL regardless of the day or night. It comes up with same message as you. We have to close it down and restart at least ten times a day if not more. It's not funny  !

OH has Firefox on his computer and it makes no difference. We've been with AOL for years but are now seriously thinking it's about time we ditched them when we are out of contract in five weeks time.

Can understand how you're feeling. We went through a really bad period
and it lasted for ages. However, must say it's been much better lately. Was actually going to switch to SKY but because the service had improved and AOL offered me a reduction on our Silver package from £17.99 down to £12.99 plus a new wireless router(free) we've decided to take up the new deal even though we're tied in for another year. I found Firefox actually slowed down everything for me and I've uninstalled it. Really liked it but everything became mega slow. Good luck on whatever choice you make.

I am also currently looking for a new provider, but a browser worth trying is OPERA, I have found it easier and quicker than firefox and internet explorer.
