  • I think you will struggle to get anything under £1000, Although I have just done a rough quote using www.confused.com and it came out at approx. £800 (25 year old, no claims, fully com). However comparing that to what they quoted me (26 year old, 7 years no claims, fully com) = £325.00 (which is probably high compared to an older person). I think your better off selling the car getting a cheap run-around and save the money you would of spent for a rainy day!
  • "Fronting" can invalidate your insurance, thus meaning that you have been driving without insurance - about 6 penalty points. If you are lucky, the insurance company will accept your cover, but will expect you to pay up what you would originally have been due had the insurance been in your own name originally.

Ballymackeonan has hit it on the head, its been done before.

Best starting on your own policy anyway, insurance tends to be rated on the highest risked driver now anyway, so you will be better off building up your own no claims bonus

you cannot get an IN10 conviction for fronting - it's totally different to driving without insurance!!!!

no judge in their right mind would take things that far and to think differently is laughable:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I believe the correct code is an IN14 conviction, not an IN10, IN14 is allowing another user to drive without valid insurance.

interesting, although IN14 doesn't feature in this list:

    http://www.licencecheck.co.uk/offense_codes.php

any idea why it wouldn't be there? also tried DVLA website and typed IN14 into the search but it returns nothing:confused:

    From here via here
    Aiding, abetting, counselling or procuring
Offences as coded, but with 0 changed to 2 eg LC10 becomes LC12.

    Causing or permitting
Offences as coded, but with 0 changed to 4 eg LC10 becomes LC14.
IN14=Causing or permitting the use of a vehicle uninsured against third party risks

If you take out 3rd party only insurance then what exactly are they "not going to pay up"??????

    From http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/news/car-insurance-economy-with-the-truth-costs-drivers-dearly.html

    'Case Studies

    Fronting

A man took out insurance on a car he claimed was his own, but which in fact belonged to his son and his son was the main driver. This meant the premiums were lower than if the son took out insurance in his own name.
The son had an accident, rendering the car a write off. However, when he made a claim the insurer discovered the "fronting" fraud. It declared the policy void and refused to deal with the claim, leaving the owner with no compensation for the loss of his car.
Also, as another car was involved in the accident, the insurer still had to deal with the third party's claim. Therefore the policyholder still has to pay the full premium.
And, depending on the third party claim costs, the insurer may approach the policyholder to recover some of these costs.
The man will now have to tell any future insurers that he has had a policy declared void – meaning many will not provide cover, and any that do may charge a much higher premium.
Total cost to policyholder: over £12,000 (plus possible third-party costs and higher future premiums).'

this alleged case study specifically says that the customer lied about the cars ownership, which obviously makes a big difference. i wouldn't for one moment suggest someone lies when setting up the policy, but putting yourself down as the named driver is not lying, and so you're not doing anything wrong.

interesting that the person in the case study wasn't prosecuted - why would that be if fronting was illegal?????

that is your opinion and you are entitled to it. but you fail to answer the question - if, as you claim, this is illegal, then has anyone ever been convicted of this specific "crime"?
Not sure - but I have heard of people's insurance being invalidated after they've had a prang - making them uninsured drivers...
but putting yourself down as the named driver is not lying, and so you're not doing anything wrong
You are telling the insurers that you are not the main drive of the car - which is false.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.
