Just wondering if anyone owns this phone and what your thoughts are on it.

Thanks

I have one for work purposes and think it is a great phone. My colleague has an iphone, and having compared them we both agree there is very little in it - it just comes down to individual preference. The only down side is the battery performance is poor - however I have installed a power manager app which seems to improve it, and have it in a cradle with car charger and fm transmitter in the car, but it still needs charging every night to prevent it running out when you use it.

Perhaps wait for the HTC Magic on voda due next month and see if the battery performance is improved?

I've had one for 5 weeks and think its a great phone. Internet browsing and the pull out qwerty keyboard are a godsend. I like the way it syncs your gmail contacts and calender too.

As samba says, battery life isn't great but it lasts a full day for me.

I've had one since October last year and I still really like it. The battery life isn't great but can be helped by making sure the GPS is turned off and such like. And if you own a TomTom you can use the same charger in the car so it's one less thing to buy! A lot of the applications to download are now starting to charge a nominal fee (the were all free before) but there are still a fair few applications that don't charge. I like it that you can very easily uninstall things you don't use or the novelty wares off!

Another plus point IMO is that it's impossible to text whilst driving which you still see soooooo many stoopid people doing! You can't even attempt to do so, therefore no temptation to try!

But the camera on it is Dire! Absolutely rubbish although there are applications to download that make it slightly better. And no flash either. To be fair they did tell me this in the shop but I wasn't bothered as I have a good digital camera anyway

i've had an iphone for a week and own a g1.

I prefer the G1 but thats because I use most google apps. If you dont use gmail for example, then its not going to be that exciting for you. I'd go iphone in this case.

The main break for most people is this, do you like a virtual keyboard (on-screen) or a hard keyboard. Some people can't manage the virtual ones, making the G1 a better option. If you don't mind the virtual keyboard, you may prefer the iphone. I do find that the keyboard is quite often the decider.

App stores for both are very similar. I think your level of google orientation and keyboard preference will be your deciders. Ignore all the reviews about how amazing or bad each one is, they're all fanboy reviews.

The g1 is a good phone, iphone will always be held in very high regard because its a fashion symbol and sexy looking. G1 is not sexy but it wins in functionality vs price.

I would totally agree with that. Having an ipod Touch and G1 gives me a bit of an insight into both and you sem to have summed it up as I see it too.

for me all the apps on both are gimicks except for a few apps, which end up becoming part of future releases by default when the designers see how widely they are used. Doesn't stop me finding the most random app on the market and geeking out in front of my colleagues; ie.. virtual beer drinking, fantasy real time stock exchange competition.

After having the phone for 4 months, I mainly, in order:

Check/write gmails (get notification as standard)
    Make calls
    Write texts
Use facebook (not the app but x.facebook.com on browser, with shortcut on desktop)
    Use tube status (London)

Nice extra with the G1 is that the phonebook is your gmail contacts. Anything you add in gmail contacts online is your phonebook Also like how I can see from my phonebook who is on gtalk.

Thats another thing, if you use gtalk its another winner. My best mates are on gtalk (mainly because every other IM is blocked at work, except gtalk through gmail web browser).

I use my phone to synch my outlook meetings for work. I run google calendar sych on my PC. It automatically puts my outlook meetings on my google calendar. As the G1 its synched with my google calendar, I see my outlook events. Took a while to figure that one out.
