Cancel cards

I currently have plenty of credit cards (about 5) through tarting which have nothing on them at all. Reading the article on the front page I've decided it's in my best interests to cancel these cards and just keep the card I use.

Is it possible to cancel the card just through a written letter or do I have to ring and listen to the person who trys to sell me loans and moaning on that I shouldn't cancel the card wasting my time and theres ? I've also heard that the cards don't always get closed they get suspended instead and you have to then ring up late to check they have actually completly close the account whereas I assume a written letter would remove this problem.

Thanks in advance.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I sent Egg an email last week to cancel - they did it from that. Just put you have cut up the card and would like it cancelled.

I wrote and ask for the account to be closed and asked them to send a cofirmation letter back to me.
They did in about one week and asked me to cut up any cards I had.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Another way that AMEX use is, you have to write to them to cancel and send your card back to them cut up. Unless it's lost or you have thrown it!

Champion that's great news then, think I'll do it that way instead then. I might even email egg now to cancel my egg card. I tried it with Barclaycard but they wouldn't do it via the secure email. Thanks for the help.

I have an unused tesco cc. Cancelling it was easy. I cut the card up and rang them this morning. No hard sell or anything. It is now cancelled and I don`t have to send the bits in

I now only have one cc and it is linked to my online bank account. I check the details every day so can quickly keep tabs on any loss from my account. I figured it was a good idea to minimise the risk of theft

I had no problems with phoning people - in fact, thats the best way to get existing customer offers. Only Capital One were a bit arsey. My limit was £8000 and I said I was cancelling to improve my credit score ahead of a mortgage application. The bloke was droning on and on, so I eventually accepted his offer of reducing my credit limit to £1k. I now regret this, as when I cancelled a month after, it shows I have had 30 months history with a final limit of £1k, instead of £8k. I'm sure showing an £8k limit would have made me look a far more responsible borrower to other companies I apply to.

Right I closed my mint card, my Egg card and rang up Barclaycard. Now Barclaycard are the people I'm not 100% sure about. I rang and told them I wanted to cancel and they said the account was already closed already. I said but I've not rang up before to close it. They said the account was closed a fair few months ago. I said well can you send me confirmation that the account has closed. They said we can't do that now we can only do that when the account was closed you would have been asked then. I repeated that I hadn't closed my account earlier and would like confirmation. They said again that they can't do this. I asked them to confirm that it won't show up then if I ever do credit checks and they said no (not worth anything them saying it but there you go).

Now I know martin has said in one of his items that credit card companies are good at not closing accounts despite what they say, is there anyway I can check to make sure it really is closed ?

    Thanks

I Phoned Egg And They Just Told Me To Cut The Card Up And That They Would Send Me A Confirmation Email To Say That The Account Will Be Closing And I Had 48 Hours To Print Off Any Statements That I May Have Wanted Before They Closed The Online Access.

I was thinking about doing the very same thing, I have about 8 cards that I don't use, and maybe two I use occasionally.

I'm going to cancel the majority this week.
