Lots of photos to scan - how and best way ?

I want to put all my old photos, pre digital onto CD and that is ALOT of pictures.

Is the only way to do it to get a scanner and spend days scanning them all ? Am I living in a dreamworld to think that there is a machine to do it for you ? ;)

Also, is a stand alone scanner the best, or do the 3 in 1 machines do a good job aswell ? My printer is quite old so I could justify replacing it.

Thank in advance for any advice you may have

    Thanks Rogerramjet !

It's good to know that there is a product out there that can do what i want, I will just shop around now.

The only unfortunate thing is that the model you suggested takes 6 x 4 and most of my prints are 7 x 5

A local Print & Copy shop, or Camera shop may offer this service.
I would not send through the post, or deal with a shop that did not do the work on-site.

Ideally an A3 size scanner with batch scanning software. How many prints have you to scan?

I have the HP 5500 scanner with auto photo feeder, I scanned loads of photos at the begining it was brilliant but as said above it only takes up to 4" wide pictures. anything bigger and you may aswell just scan them 2 at a time and crop the images.

Thousands !!! And if I did mine, I suppose friends and family would want theirs done aswell.

Some are 6 x 4, but I have so many from my travels around the world pre digital as well as childhood ones and black and white irreplaceable Grandparents-in-the war ones.

I don't mind paying a reasonable amount, which I figure is cheaper and easier than standing at my local Asda till Christmas scanning them !

    Any ideas ?

Alison ..consider scanning the negatives - if you have them - you will be able to batch scan them in the 2 scanners mentioned and also get the lil bits of the pics that did not get printed
    Rich people save then spend.

Well I sorted my photos into batches fo rdifferent folder son the PC. Scanned a batch a night (average 10 per batch) and the put them in ana envelope for storage.

Cleared 600 photos in a month by scanning a few here and a few there. Soon goes down.

I am now starting on my football programmes as I have loads that arent worth anything . so will scan and offer them back to my local club to sell on to raise funds.

I also borrow magazines from frined s, scan articles I think I will ike and pass mag pack. Not legal , but saves a small fortune

When I was 13 with my new super duper 110 pink boots camera - keeping the negatives was the last thing on my mind ;)

And when I got some pictures developed in Africa - the photo developer kept the negs as he wanted to print some of the shots himself !

Negatives and me do not go !!
