White Gloss kitchen units?

Just starting to look for new kitchen units and found slab white gloss in Homebase yesterday which suits me fine, no awkward corners to clean etc but I'm wondering just how easy are they to keep clean and do they scratch?

They look lovely when they are new, but are easily chipped and in no time will look cheap and nasty.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

I love white gloss kitchens.
You do have to be careful when cleaning them (or leaving instructions for you cleaner).
Only use a clean microfibre cloth, & warm soapy water. Under no circumstances should you scrub them with a scouring pad. As long as you remember that, & clean them little & often (rather than leaving it for a big spring clean, when you need to remove 3 inches of grease!), they are so easy to clean. The fact is the white gloss does show marks & dirt easily, so you end up wiping it quickly when you see a mark, rather than letting it build up anyway.0 -
I have a vanilla gloss (cream) units from homebase, only had them a month but i clean them with a microfibre cloth too - and as sooz says little and often seems to do the trick0

I have white gloss units that are now about 6 years old in my utility room - they were from MFI so cannot comment specifically on the quality of the Homebase ones, but mine are still in excellent condition, still white and glossy and not chipped or spoilt despite the fact that I have cats who are not always careful where their feet go when jumping up.
They do show the dirt a lot - but that is what I like about them:D - you can see straight away what needs cleaning off:D .
Have put some from B&Q in the utility room at my mothers house and these appear to be just as nice."there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -
I'm just getting quotes for a new kitchen atm too. I was in B&Q, they've just put some white gloss ones on display (they were still working on the displays, so very new) and i could see surface scratches on them already. My personal thoughts as well are that they might "date" quickly, just like my skanky golden oak cathedral arch cupboards have

I'm about to actually measure the kitchen at the moment and am seeing Homebase tomorrow for a plan then will work from there. Popped into B&Q last night after seeing mention of these doors but they didn't have any on show other than the clear glass and I'd really like to know what they look like without any lights behind.
I take your point about dating GP my country pine look is not quite the same these daysbut it needs doing and it needs to be brighter. I had always liked the shaker style in cream but like the idea of a slab door, decisions, decisions.
Going to get my man "who does" out next week and we can talk out what can and can't be done in the space I have.
Thanks for the input folks, I have the microfibre cloths at the ready0 -
I put a white gloss kitchen in 3 years ago, it's pvc wrap and it's the easiest thing to clean ever. No need for microfibre clothes, old rags work fine. No scratches either. PVC wrap is dead easy to clean.0

Actually, have had a look and that is what mine is I think - not the sort of melamine surface but really glossy."there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -
I agree entirely with sooz. treat them right and they will last. I've never seen a white gloss kitchen door chip - in fact the cheaper ones look more likely to peel but again, I've not seen that either.
Always a soft cloth and sometimes elbow grease . If there is something difficult to remove then soak it with water first for a few minutes to see if it softens or the use the flat of a fingernail to remove it before you ever think of touching it with a scouring pad. You should see what I did to our car with a scouring pad, so it's really not about quality, just the fact that it's so smooth.
I've found that people really abuse display kitchens to see if they scratch etc and do things that they'd never dream of doing at home - stuff that I'd not dream of doing anyhow (unless it was washing a BMW with a scoring pad)
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

That's right, it's different from melamine. Mine has the same material on the front as on the edged of the door, it's wrapped on. This type of high gloss pvc works well with modern kitchens and it's cheap too.
It's good to know yours is 6 years old and still lasting moggy. :T0
