audio to mp3 recording

can anyone help, ive seen it and done it before, but cant remember how to . i want to play some audio and record it, then save it as mp3. last time i did this was using sm player, the beebotron list and winff and mp3direct cut, i also had a record program but not on current pc. running xp. thanks

I use this free sound recorder.Records anything on your pc and is so simple to use.
google freesoundrecorder.
It wont allow me to post links any more as a new user despite being a user for ages

have followed the link exegnomad gave me. it was what i used before. i have audacity and lame, but when i play sound no recordering is made, before you could see the sound waves now it is 1 straight line, any clues as to what settings i should be looking at

Had the same problem at home, worked it out, and managed to get audacity to work, so will get back to this later, if someone hasn't already.

Possibly you aren't allowing long enough for the full file to be downloaded, that is what I have done sometimes. Unfortunately Smplayer doesn't tell you when it has finished downloading - I open the screenshots folder and hover the mouse pointer over the stream.dump file (not opening it) to see how big it is - a 30 minute programme seems to be about 16 Mb.

Also, at first I didn't remember to show file extensions so I wasn't able to delete the .dump identifier and rename the audio files as .ra before converting and loading them into audacity.

I used to use Audiograbber on XP -it's not as good under Vista but a neat utility.

bat99, hello, it was your thread i originally followed couple of years ago. anyway im on a different pc now and looked up your thread to put all the bits back on , i have the beebtron site, sm player, mp3 direct cut and winff. all works fine. my problem is with audacity. i have a recording saved from audible , which i believe the only way to save to mp3 is to play it and record it, i have also tried with sound files on the pc and an audio disc when i press reord as before all i get is a straight line , after a minute or so i stop try to export as mp3, it saves the file so that side is fine , but there is no sound. BTW i have followed audacity and got lame as well.
