Another Option Other Than BT For Line Rental!

Folks,
Just to let you all know that you can now use Onetel for your line rental - no more BT!!!
You keep the same telephone number, 1471 is still available and is free and at the minute 1571 is free too. I use 1899 and I'm assured that I can still use this service with the Onetel line.
At the moment I'm paying £9.75 a month for the line rental and the Standard UK Talk service which gives you free weekend calls to UK landlines starting 01 and 02 plus evening calls to UK landlines for just 5p an hour.
The price of line rental is changing to £10.49 a month for charges applied after 1st March 2006 - customers with online billing are to receive a 50p monthly credit.
It's only a little bit cheaper than BT but hey, it's not BT!
Here's their web site if you're interested:

Cheers

Welcome.
The merits of moving your line rental away from BT have been discussed here a few times. Its generally thought its not a good idea unless your a low user,or you have a special promotional deal.
You can no longer sign up for OneTel Line rental. The OneTel site directs you to the Talk Talk site.
OneTel have been taken over by TT and they are in process of amalgamating the Two Products. TT have recently barred access to short codes like 1899.18866.18185 for line rental customers, and they will do the same to Onetel Line Rental Customers.
When the products are amalgamated TT charge for Caller Display and 1571 Basic Voicemail. So if you had those products with them it will cost you £12.49 a month the same thing with BT is £11.
BT have to allow you access to codes like 1899.You can also take advantage of the FREE evening and weekend call package from Primus Saver 2.(They actually pay you to make Free Calls!!!) See Martin MSE recent post here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=158606&page=1&pp=10
You cant avail yourself of this offer unless your a BT line rental customer!PF.0 -

OneTel only rent/lease the line from BT Wholesale so its still technically with BT.The only difference is One Tel bill you. With add ons like caller display this method can be more expensive, then using BT direct.0 -
I've just had a call from Onetel asking if I'd like to change my line rental over to them rather than use BT. I told them I wanted to stay with BT, they can't change over the line though can they. The woman that called me seemed quite hacked off that I didn't want to change the line over.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. Be prepared for a letter from BT saying how sorry they are that you're leaving!Smiley_Mum wrote:I've just had a call from Onetel asking if I'd like to change my line rental over to them rather than use BT. It's called 'slamming' when a provider alleges you've agreed to change when you haven't and puts the paperwork through anyway. If such a letter arrives, a quick call to BT to say, "No, I have not agreed to change" will resolve the issue though.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
She did state to me that the call was recorded etc, I wonder if they do "slam" me as you mentioned above, whether I could get them to go back over their call records to get the info, stating that I don't want Onetel for line rental.
12.37pm on 3rd March 2006. Told Onetel noway to line rental, thank you and goodbye.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.” - Oscar Wilde0 -
I've been using Onetel for line rental for a while now, no problems whatsoever. With the TT takeover, I had considered changing back to BT, or even the £50 credit plus cashback deal from the Post Office - but I think I'll stay with them for now, see how it goes - after all it will still cheaper than BT at £9.99 per month.
I agree that for people who want to use CPS for free evening calls and use caller display, the BT line rental plus Primus CPS is a better option - but VOIP provides me with all the free/cheap calls I need, and caller display too on multiple local voip-in numbers.
Also, sadly, the free evening/weekend calls by CPS market seems to be slowly dwindling with the advent of the TT takeovers - maybe this could be a sign of things to come?

OneTel have just put up line rental to 10.49p a month!! I reckon the 51p a more i pay to BT is worth it. They allow me to CPS my calls, use 1899 etc and give me caller display for free.0

There is a 50p monthly credit for customers with on-line billing and so the saving is actually still £1.01 per month. For customers signing up to line rental on or before 30/11/05, there will be a 'free month' credit after six months, which now worths £9.99.0 -

But i read they charge for Caller Display on top of line rental unlike BT,and they are likely to bar calls to 1899 etc. Both would be essential to me if i move from Cable. So it looks like BT are best bet with Primus Saver added on.0
