It will look really wierd though. Don't expect it to work as an image.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

I've taken a lovely photo of my daughter but she's sat on concrete. On gimp would i be able to just take her off and put her on a white background?
Yes as MartyJ says it can be done but how well it works depends on the picture. It can take some effort and a mixture of techniques to blend around an image especially on a white background.
This is a quick effort as an example but with a bit more time you can make it look tidier.

I'm sure there will be a tutorial out there somewhere - I'll get back if I find one :)

To get colour in only one area, you use masks. Nothing to do with cutting out.

Basically what you do is overlay the entire image with black and white, and then you "rub out" (with eraser) the areas you want in colour.

Can't remember 100% how to do it, but it's fairly simple. There should be plenty of tutorials around for it.

Technically you select the part you want keep in colour, invert the selection and then desaturate (i.e. remove the colour)... Or just use a mask, desaturated the non-masked areas. Easy in Photoshop.

Proper conversion to greyscale relies of more advanced techniques than just using the poor "convert to greyscale" options, a combination of channel mixers, can give a much better response than a muddy convert to greyscale, but then this is basic home users vs professional techniques!

Download free Paint.Net and read the tutorials.

This was covered in the GIMP Tutorial mentioned earlier. The latter request to remove the concrete background can be done using a similar technique.

    Ditto
  • So you don't think it'll work that well on just white?

Is it possible to put her on say some grass or perhaps something else?

One thing i'd like to add is that i'm a novice at this! No all that clued up, a tutorial would be great.

    Thanks
