  • Mine was when I was 18. I bought a computer on “Buy now pay in 12 months”. I had the money to pay for the computer, but being a bright spark thought I would put the money in a savings account for a year! I made £40 in interest on the savings!
Stupid thing is I missed the deadline to settle the debt, the credit company refused to let me settle the debt early and I was tied into a 3 year repayment plan at around 30%! I paid out £1600 in interest! =/

So saving my money for a year cost me £1560, I certainly felt like a mug and wont be making that mistake again!

Innocent smoothies! 3.00 per carton. I thought 'I'll make my own'. I did and my first batch of 4 pints cost me about 4.99 (Saving approx £3). Turns out I used far too many strawberries and spent much of the next day on the toilet. So actually wasted £4.99!

Plus, presumably, the cost of the Andrex (sorry)........................... :rotfl:

My biggest muck up in money saving was (as a few people have said already), the consolidation loan, to clear everything - and in a major bout of depression blew the lot!

And another one would probably have to be the credit card transfer balances. Robbing Peter to pay Paul, and still ending up owing Peter!

    My worst ever nightmare.

Ah well, REALLY have learned my lesson now. Took nearly losing my marriage to do it, but I am NEVER going to have debt again (like anyone would let me! ha ha)

  • I've also done the false economy consolidation loan. On a daily level I realised my addiction to diet coke and chocolate was costing me a fortune so I decided to buy bigger value bottles and bars from the supermarket instead of corner shop. The money saving failed. I'm fatter and spending even more money on my addiction!

I have consolidated twice and tried a third time in December but failed

Tried to buy a cheap car then found out that it needed a lot of work and then got written off a few weeks later and nothing to show for it

Its got to be our consolidation loan that we took out, we racked up the same debt within a year. I thought of it as an instant debt free plan. Of course it is just the opposite, those things should be labelled 'An instant way to increase your debt and incarcerate your money with us forever'.

Second choice would have to be Tesco value bread, I wouldn't even feed it to the ducks! I am a BIG fan of most of the value and especially Sainsbury's basics range though!
