v confused about benefits, couple with baby

hi,
i wil start uni in september, and my bf is currently at uni.we have a 2 yr old daughter together. we are thinking about moving in together in may when he finishes uni for the summer.
i am on IS ctc, cb, hb and ctb. i no i wil lose all of these in september. but if he did move in, in may (may is so he can claim all the loans etc under my income for next yr, not his parents) does anyone know if il stil get help.
i no il stil get cb, but am worried about the rest. with the whole recession thing, its been impossible for him to get a job. either full time for the summer, or part time for good. i cant work because of my daughter.
my is wil stop becuase i wont be a loan parent. but, we cant live off the 20pw cb for 4 mths. would one of us be able to claim jsa? or is? i know there is some confsion about student couples with dependents, but ive been to the cab and phoned the benefits people, AND asked at my jobcentre, and no one knew?
i know we could just wait until sept when my student loan and grant kicks in, but then wel struggle REALLY REALLY badly for the whole of next yr because he will get like, no help.
sorry for the long windedness and repeating myself, just very worried
mnay thanks

  • Hi leanne,
I know exactly how you feel!
My son is due to start Uni in September and his gf is going back to college, they have a 5 month old and would like to move in together but just don't know where they stand! No-one seems to be able to help.
I'm sorry I can't answer your questions as they are questions we too have been asking for the last few months.
Son has to start applying for Student finance pretty soon and doesn't know what to do!
I'll be watching this thread with interest also.
Hope you get the answers you really need.

If your boyfriend wasn't assessed as an independent student at the start of his course then he can't become so part way through, so he'll still be assessed on his parents' income for the rest of his course.

Your claim for IS/ LHA will be assessed on your joint income, which will include his student finance, so you may still receive some money that way. Neither of you can claim JSA as you're not available for work.

For more detailed information, one of you should contact the Student Services at your university as they're likely to be far more knowledgeable about students and benefits than the people you've contacted so far.

But her's been a father for 2 years already, so how has this changed now? Sorry if I've missed something.

Edit: Right, I've just spotted this so I suppose this is what you're going on.

Also because the op's BF is her child's father and I bet he stays over at her house regulary, they maybe already classed as being a couple for benefit purposes.

Has he looked at signing up with any temp agencies?

We have a recruitment freeze on at the mo & are actually heavily reliant on temps. I bet a lot of other organisations would be looking fo rtemps too.

  • My goodness gracious me.
May I suggest you drastically improve your spelling and punctuation before starting university!
It may improve your degree prospects in the long run.
I hadn't realised educational standards have drastically dropped that much in this country.
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)

You may be entitled to tax credits but would need to ring them to find out for sure. I know my friend got the highest rate as she an her partner were both students but they did work PT aswell.
