    Debt-free and Proud!
I had my 30th party at my local Conservative Club. It cost me £80 for the hire of a really nice room, then £80 to hire some Dj decks ( a amte did the music, it's only CDs after all) and people bought their own drinks at the very cheap bar.

My mum did provide some nibbles but TBH honest most were left over at the end of the night.

I put tealights on the tables, and 30th birthday glitter stuff, and it was great fun (hard work though as I organised it all!)

I sent out proper nice ivnites three months before, and had to chase most people. I invited 120 and got 60 there in the end, so do over-invite as people tend to be rubbish!!

Check out places like social clubs as they tend to be very cheap with cheap bars, and yet nice rooms. Mine basically cost £160 and was a great night for everyone.

My friend is having a 30th birthday party next saturday and I really need help with what to buy her. I've known her for years but I really don't know what she likes. I've got £20/£30 to spend and was thinking of maybe just getting her a voucher but I think this seems a bit impersonal.

She likes being pampered and has had a couple of days at a spa before but other than that I don't have a clue what she likes. She doesn't really go out much and she's studying to be a nurse right now so I was thinking of maybe something from the bodyshop or somewhere like that, something that she can pamper herself with.

Really need some help on this please.

go to one of these shops like that smelly shop lush and get some stuff from there :) you can make up personal things there - but do be warned, you might need some breathing apparatus before you go in to the shop! i cant even walk past the shop in town without being on my hands and knees looking for fresh air lol

I would second Lush, for my friend's 30th I bought her a gift box from Lush, the good thing about them is that they have a 10% off voucher in them! They've got them in all different prices ranges, so you could get a little one and then something else if you wanted :-)

Never been in Lush so will give it a try, maybe like you say I could get her a little gift box and get her something else to go with it. Thanks for the suggestions.

Been trying to get into their website but it must be down just now, will give it a try later. Even better if i can order it online, means I won't have to trek around town with a 3yr old in tow.
  • if she likes pamper things y not go to a beauty salon and get her a treatment for something sercificlike a foot massage or a back massage something that she wouldnt treat herself to

Hows about you make her up a little hamper full of pampering things - this way you get several smaller items and make it look nice in a box or something. I have done this sort of thing before, got a box, half filled it with shredded paper, covered the shredded paper with some bubble wrap, put the items in it then covered it with sticky back plastic or clingfilm. It looks really nice and effective and often looks as if you have spend more than you actually have!

OK, having just turned 30, and having once upon a time been a nurse, these are my suggestions (FWTW),

If you are going down the pampery route, try Molton Brown stuff, it's gorgeous - or maybe get one of those stes full of things like face masks, toe separators, foot massage stuff, tweezers etc etc

However, 30 feels quite significant, so it might be best to get her something a bit more memorable (bearing in mind your £20 - £30 budget):

    - Dunelm do great big fleecy blankets / throws - try getting one to match her bedrrom / front room colour scheme, great for snuggling under after a !!!!!! shift at work.

    - How about one of those 'experience' things from Boots? I know you can get a studio photo one for about £30 - good memento?

    - DVDs or CDs from our growing up years, like the Goonies, Dirty Dancing, 80's hits compilations, Dangermouse, Inspector Gadget, etc etc

    - Aromatherapy stuff for relaxing when taking a break from studying / relaxing after work (recommend Woods of Windsor)

    - Bottle of favourite perfume

    HTH.
