I managed to build a simple pc with an MSI 865G neo2-P motherboard but i added a few new things to it ( ram graphics card and harddrive etc) and now i cant even get the thing to post. i have cleaned everything out and remounted the motherboard and tried an out of case powerup still to no sucess. The 2.80 ghz process which was in the motherboard definetly is compatible as i had a pc up and running with xp on a small hardrive. If i just use the 20 pin ATX connector and i turn the thing on the fan powers up and the cd drive i installed opens and closes but nothing else happens. when i put the 4 pin 12v atx cable in the available socket on the mtherboard, the thing wont even turn on at all. Not sure whats happened becuase i had the motherboard up and working, and it is definetly not shorting in the case as the same thing happens out of the case. I'm new to this building area and i would appreciate any advice you can give. really not sure why it wont turn on with the 4 pin cable attached now.
thanks johnny
note: all the specs....
motherboard : 865G neo2 2-p
CPU : pentium 4 2.80 ghz
memory : 2 ddr 266 mhz ram sticks one being 512 mb and one being 256 mb, i had it working with the 256 mb one before but have tried it in every socket now and had no luck with that.
psu: win power atx 400 . 400W supply, it had the pc working before i started adding new things.
hard drive : western digital wd2500 250gb
cd: standard 16 x cd drive which was functional before.
i had the thing working before but i added new parts to it and now im not sure, could anyone give me tips about sorting out the cmos? there are no jumpers on this board , or im just not looking hard enough. by the way when i turn this on with out the 4 pin connector the mouse and keyboard lights come on. although there is no functionality from them.
thanks johnny

From the post it suggests that you have had a working system? But have added components which have caused problems? If so please go back to a known working state. Once the system is back to working, add each component one at a time, check the BIOS recognizes it. There is power going through the components ie CD drive opening, lights flash. There should be a set of three jumpers across which you can reset the BIOS on the motherboard0

thanks for your reply. i have tried to go back to the original settings, but cant seem to get the motherboard to turn on now, the pc wont turn on with the 4 pin connector attach at all. not sure if this is even needed???? ive tried this connector with a different working psu and still no work... i cant even get the thing to post now but if there is power to more than just the fan it suggests that there is something small im missing here. im having trouble finding this jumpers, jbat1 it is usualy called. im new to all this only started a few days but am trying to make sense of it all. thanks...
p.s not getting any speaker beeps either now.0 -
It could be worth resetting the bios, there should be jumper to do this, failing that take the battery out for a few minutes.
Sounds very much like a board problem, can you confirm the board worked before?Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

to me it looks like a psu problem not board problem
there is only one problem i can see with that and thats the psu, seen to many of then go bang in the passed for no resson ,winpower to me = killer psu,you would be better with somthing like this http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=1534&category_id=646&manufacturer_id=0&tid=hpu-4s425 it's a lott better psu than any winpower (sorry it's not money saving )there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff0 -
im sure it is not a psu problem, it is a 400W supply and i have tried a 350 W supply instead and it still wont power up with the 4 pin connector attached to the jpw1 socket, yet without it , the mouse, keyboard etc all power up, so its definetly something to do with this socket but im really not sure what
thanks for your advice everyone). may i add the motherboard was working ok before, but when ive added these new parts. even if i go back to the old spec it wont power up with the jpw1. not sure! 0 -
jsuk1988, with a Core Duo, the 4 pin connector should definitely be connected to the jpw1 socket - this powers the CPU!
Have you tried powering up with nothing connected or installed except RAM, video, and keyboard? Any beeps at all when it's powered up?0 -
heya thanks for replying. i have tried an out of case power up on a wooden surface.and it wont turn on with the jpw1 connected. i know this jpw1 connector needs to be in to power the cpu, but dont understand why the thing wont turn on with it pluged in. it must be shorting somewhere but i have cleaned it and checked the back for any loose connections. could it be the cpu? any idea?
thanks0 -
You'll need to swap out the parts with known working ones to see where the problem is.0

hmm, i have done like a completly empty build without ram in with the speaker attached , the motherboard simply wont turnon with this jpw1 one not connected. i guess i need to get it starting with this jpw1 connector before i can move any further, cheers.0

motherboard 1 stick of ram, cpu + heatsink PSU and a speaker...turn on listen for beeps.
you do have the fan connector from the CPU fan attached to the motherboard..don't you?Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0
