  • Was there a problem with tesco petrol as well? I'd seen something about their diesel causing widespread problems.

    Yep, seen it now. Seems like Tesco cant be trusted with any sort of fuel

    to be fair when a car is overfueling it is common for it to be the coolant temp sensor, the sensors car read that the car is cold therefore the ecu puts way too much fuel in (a car uses roughly double the fuel when cold to when warm)

    And, providing it is giving a reading within range, ie that of a cold engine, it will not show up as a dignostic fault.

    Getting back to basics, and over/under fuelling is about as basic as it can get in a petrol engine, there are 2 or 3 simple checks that can be easily done.

    If the car is overfuelling to the extent you suggest;

    1) You will be able to smell it at warm tickover

    2) You will see black smoke from the exhaust under accelaration

    3) The exhaust will be black rather than brown/whiteish at the open end

    4) Removing the spark plugs will show either black sooty deposits,-too rich, or normal brownish deposits. If it's white it is too lean.

    All checks need doing with the engine warmed up.

    All simple stuff that any unbiased garage should sort for you for less than an hrs labour if you have no one to help.

    Get a report if they find anything wrong and pay the selling garage a "visit";) ;)
    I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

    Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

    You need to get points 3 and 4 checked then.

    This will just show if you have a fuelling problem. As has already been mentioned the water temp sensor is most likely the culprit, but it could be a few other things, air temp sensor etc.
