Hi was wondering if anyone can help me, I am 34wks pregnant and still with my unborn baby's father we don't live together but am confused about what will happen when the baby is born I'm currently receiving income support and my boyfriend is a self employed joiner, I know that by law his name has to be present on the birth certificate which is what I would prefer anyway but would this effect my benefits even if were not living together or will CSA get in contact with him?

CSA rules changed in 2008, both parents can agree to a private arrangement without using the CSA but if the PWC is getting IS she must inform them of this private arrangement.
Legal changes have happened in child maintenance during 2008. They mainly affect parents where the parent with the main day-to-day care is on benefit.
Until the law changed, if you were the parent with the main day-to-day care and you were on benefit, you had to arrange child maintenance using the Child Support Agency (CSA). You weren't able to opt out and make a private agreement with the other parent.
But that's changed now.- Since 27 October 2008, all parents have had the choice of setting up a child maintenance arrangement using the CSA or making a private agreement about child maintenance with the other parent.
- And if you're the parent with the main day-to-day care, you can now keep more of the child maintenance you receive before it affects your benefits. Read more about how child maintenance affects benefits.

just kind of backing up what the others have said
the fathers name doesnt have to be on the birth cert if you dont want it to be, you can add it at a later date.
also, yeah you can have a private arrangement. I am not with my daughters father, but we had already sorted out his child maintenenace privately, so I told the income support people how much he could afford, and they deducted it from my income support. I think they probably prefer this since many people seem to say they have problems with csa?
hope that helps?0 -
I dont understand why this is an issue, he is the father, you are together, so the name should without a doubt go on the birth certificate.
As mentioned CSA dont get involved automatically, but even if they did is that such a bad thing, he is the father afterall and should be paying towards the baby

You have two threads going asking the same question make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Why isn't your boyfriend supporting you instead of Income Support? Is this why you're worried about the birth certificate thing?Hanny:easter_ba0

Copied from the first thread.
His name by law does not have to be on the birth certificate. I think that if his name is to be put on the certificate then he has to be present to witness this and agree with it.
Please do not hesitate for one moment about putting his name on the birth certificate, it can have major repercussions later on in your babys life.
Please forgive me if this sounds judgemental, it is not meant to be. My sister's father is not named on her
birth certificate (in those days it actually used to say 'father unknown' ) I cant begin to explain how much this hurt her and still does to this day 63 years later.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

these days it seems that a female can name any male as a father on a birth certificate, (see new laws, esp, re: ivf babys).
this is unethical and immoral in my opinion. Please if you know your babys father always, always always tell the truth and name him, can you imagine seeing your own birth cert and it says 'father unknown' ?, potential for mentally destroyful situation.
dads it seems have no rights these days except in the fact they must pay money money money, its so sad, dads are loving just like mothers and love and want involvment in care and nurture, ok they are different to us and may have different opinions and different ways of doing things, men and women are different but thats what makes the world go round.
can i also add that if you get a job for 16 hours a week you will be far better off money wise and csa will not have to be involved,
you can then claim
income support
working tax credit
child tax credit
child benefit
housing benefit
council tax benefit
and get all csa payment, (but you can also have a private arrangement between you and him) therefore keep csa out of it, and al this for 16 hours of work a week which isnt much really. i know that jobs are hard to find these days but even two cleaning jobs for example a week for 8 hours each will enab,e you to claim all this, and before you say anything cleaning is a good job as if it wernt for cleaners people wouldnt be able to go to work, but apart from that it gives you the money, access to al these benefits and plenty time on your hands to do what you really want to do oh i forgot to add you can also get childcare at 80% paid for, not bad really

But yes your right just doing 16 hours unlocks alot of other income and you get to keep ALL child maintenance, and if you have been on IS for a year or more you can get in work credits etc.:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0
