Reading the shared ownership thread above made me laugh again (not the situation btw)(sorry rant coming).. the slating it gets..we have as i have said before a lovely new build house, bigger than most houses on the market, has everything we need and want for years to come and we are very happy with it, it is of course too very affordable so we get the best of both worlds!
For years and years we have been not to buy now, prices will go up/ down/ left you name it, never ever a good time rates dropping getting higher etc..you get the picture..
So a year and a half ago we thought stuff this and complained to our MP in regards to the lack of SO houses, a new estste was due to be built and we now live in it, it is quiet and lovely and love it as much as they day we moved in..it is cheap and unless we both lost our jobs and we have 4 between us! we have no money worries either..the mortgage is payable like eveyone elses and the rent too but we can change this accordingly to suit us (for example we are going to start overpaying it off) like any other house BUT we are not like our friends moaning 'we haven't enough room' 'no parking' no garden' etc
I see no difference to our situation than to our friends really? we have little equity at the mo which is not uncommon with anyone at the current time, if we came to sell tough we will lose money..we won't sell?
Don't see the downsides really? other than the ex landlord is sad im not buying his house for him!!

I'm glad someone else has a positive story of SO. My flat is huge for a 1 bed over 55sqm and my mortgage and rent combined are £350 a month. I can't rent a place privately of this standard for less than 550 a month. I have allocated parking, beautiful period features such as an 8ft arched window in the lounge, fully fitted kitchen including all appliances and a very classy bathroom.
The only downside is I have been waiting since last summer to move in, but that isn't an SO problem, it's a developer's problem. The end is drawing ever nearer and I can't wait!0 -
Thank the lord for some positivity!
Glad everything worked out for you all.
I don't want to get too carried away with praise though, it will encourage the misery anti SO crew to rock and and spoil our fun!0 -

poppysarah i saw your posts on the other bit and knew you weren't taken with it.0 -
I think some SO schemes offer value for money and do work. There has been a recent trend to housebuilders taking advantage of the 'schemes' in order to retain the higher prices on the market. They should be secondary to ANY perk or discount a housebuilder offers.I'm going for my QuidCo £million!
Total So Far: £9923.580 -
It's not something a parent would ever aspire to though is it.
"I hope when Jenny grows up she can afford to buy half a house".
Just shows how much the economy is broken.
Perhaps in the future people will feel pleased to buy only 10% of a home.0 -
But poppysarah in this day and age you are lucky if you can afford rent tbh, for years it has got slowly worse and worse and i would rather own 50% of this house then pay for somone elses. My sister pays more rent than we do in total for a 1 bed and a box room flat and as nice as it is for me it is the uncertainty of not knowing what the landlord is doing next..i feel so so happy here and settled for the first time in my life which to me is more important that what we eventually end up buying be it 50% or the whole lot.0
