My GP advised us that malaria tablets are necessary for all parts of India.

Well that just show's why you should take the advice of a professional and not lay people on the board (like me!) on such medical matters.

depending on the area you may need larium, or paludrin and chloroquin (same as avoclor i think), or just chloroquin - go to a GP because they will have the most up to date information. a friend of mine has had malaria and it's not pretty - worth feeling a bit off colour for a few days in my opinion!!

also, i find that doxycyclin is rarely recommended in this country compared to how much it is in places like australia. your GP will be the best person to give advice on what is the best medication for that area for you - mine has refused to recommend larium for me because of other parts of my medical history.

They probably are but I'm just gonna take my chance tomoro
Maybe that's what the British tourists who went to the Gambia last year and died from malaria said before they went...here

Exactly, just not worth the risk.
The nasty "1 per week" one made me feel sick for about 30mins.....then i realised i was taking them on an empty stomach.
Remembered to take it after a meal and never got any more side effects.
The hard part is remembering to take them after you get back home, but that's essential if you've had a few bites on holiday.
  • Hi, it would be best if you contact your GP. I used Lariam years ago and it did make me feel nauseous. Way to combat that was taking them with milk, but as I said, better to ask a professional. Also, I was warned not to get pregnant within a year after using them because it could have some effects (?? still don't know what effects, but it did scare me a bit). Your GP will now your medical history and can probably advise you best!!

You could buy enough for 1st week/10 days, then buy the rest in the part of India you are staying. We do this each year in Goa. I've also been told if you're staying on the coast in Goa you don't need them.

Medicines are cheap over there. When I had my dentistry work done in Goa, 9 extractions and 2 new dentures, I was prescribed a course of anti-biotics & painkillers which came to £1-10p.
