Just bought my second Nissan Almera - boring car I know but generally very reliable. Check that the brake pipes have been replaced and walk away from one with a noisy timing chain - got mine for around £1000 and so far, touch wood going fine - hope that it'll last 2 years.

If your budget is £1000, don't spend more than £700. Save the £300 for any unforseen repairs. Find a 'Used Car Buyer Checklist' on the web to help in looking over prospects. Don't worry about the make or model -- look for the best car in your price range. Buy nearby, don't travel a long way for a cheap car. Best buys are found in shop window adverts and your local free addsheets. Worth looking at Gumtree and Craigslist online. Talk to the seller on the phone. If they sound dodgy, they probably are.

i have a peugeot 306 turbo diesel. if regularly serviced these things go for ever.

my car has done 151k and is extremely reliable.

from a tank of fuel (approx £55) i get 650 miles.

insurance is cheap. costs me £152 per year fully comp - age 31.

road tax is £185 for year
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.

thanks for the advice , are Fiats reliable as i been told that if they go wrong they can be expensive to repair . £500 for a 1999 FIAT PUNTO MK1 SX 60 model with 60,000 on the clock

I was going to say a Fiesta Zetec till I saw you already had one! I've had mine for 3 years will only a few repairs (new clutch etc) and it's very economical. You could do worse than get another.
    somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's
