  • Sorry about brief intro to post above but needed to get log onto thread before pc crashed again.
    So far so good.
The screen is flickering and the icons are huge and MSE no longer fits on screen but first things first!
Can anyone please look at the above and offer thoughts?
    Thanks.
Will try and do all the other recomendations I've had if computer stays 'alive' long enough!:o

    bump
Have managed to run SAS and nothing shown.
Have now reinstalled Avira and it is scanning.
However my screen is showing really funny colours and everything is too big to fit.
Can someone please look at my Hijack scan above and any comments on the display would be much appreciated.
But the good news is computer hasn't crashed yet!

nothing wrong with the log (that I can see)...a few processes could be stopped...but people like having rubbish running...each to their own.

goto nvidia.com and download the latest display driver
once installed...right click the desktop>properties and change the resolution to something high that the monitor supports.

good spot -Chunter, I saw the kaspersky URL...thought "good call" and thought no more about it :)
..of course the OP had mentioned...2 posts down..they'd since reinstalled avira ;)

Hi. Yes have just reinstalled Avira and it is still runningbut so far has found 'Eicar test signature'. Have quarantined it.
Could this have been causing all my problems as stated in my other post a bit further down this page?

eicar is a test virus (which I linked to in a previous post) and nothing to worry about .

goto nvidia.com and download the latest display driver Will it be obvious WHAT IS the latest driver?
once installed...right click the desktop>properties and change the resolution to something high that the monitor supports. Tried to do this without the update but ALL other resolutions were greyed out, no that's not quite accurate, there WERE no other resolutions showing to select?

what computer do you have? do you know what video card it has? what operating system are you using (hjt suggests win 2000 sp4...surely some mistake?)
    ...easy way...go here...click option 2...follow the prompts

My computer is quite old, I built it myself!
Just didn't do the initial software stuff eg loading operating system:eek: .
Yes I AM running Windows 2000. it has been just great up to now and I guess I've worked on the 'if it aint broke, dont fix it' principle!
I now need to build an up to date one I guess but need to save all my data first so thats just one reason why I want to fix the blessed thing!
(Oh yes, and sentimental reasons :p !)
Will have a look and see if I can find out what the video card is, have still got the side off!
Will use your link if, when I go upstairs, the thing is still running!
Why would it not be showing any other resolution options? It used to!:D

borked driver is the most obvious reason for fixed resolution...could have been caused by any of a thousand things...we'll never know.
Drivers are there on the nvidia site for win 2k, so that should't be a problem.
No reason to go "up to date" if it's working (and it will be soon) and you're happy with it....
...I also kept hold of my 1st pc build for a long time, it took 10 years before I finally built a 'new' one..though I'd spent thousands on upgrades over the years...a bilt like the 10 year old broom joke...15 new heads and 5 new handles, but the same broom.
