Have you tried an alternative server option on speedtest.net?

The reason I ask is that a while back my closest server would give me a consistent result of about 7M while one further away would give me a more accurate 14M.

On repeated tests the Maidenhead server will not give me much over 10M



But the London server further away gives me something more realistic.

The only questionable item I se in your log is the METACAFE one. As its some sort of 'share' video program? (i know what the actual SITE is, but have you signed into SHARE videos? If so then you uploading will effect the downloading)

Open it up with NOTHING running

There shouldnt be any internet activity (particularly BLUE ~ uploading)

When you try another speedtest, have ispeeder open to see what that gives you (Im guessing it will say exactly 10.1 download)

These speed test sites aren't the most reliable things ever. The more people that are using each one at the same time as you, the less accurate your speedtest will be.

Also, as you've seen, it only measures the speed between you and one particular server, and that speed can be all over the place depending on routing. Logic suggests that closer servers should be faster, but congestion between you and the server and load on the actual server can mess things up.

I'd probably initiate 3 or 4 large http downloads (from different servers!) like linux distros and measure the speed with the tool Rik's suggesting. There's more chance of maxing out your line when downloading from several places at the same time.

You can use Rik's app when you're not (knowingly) downloading anything, to make sure nothing's using your connection that you're not aware of.

Use firefox. Use the downthemall extension. Set it to one segment per file. Start downloading all 4 of those at the same time. Wait 60 seconds for speeds to stabilise then check I-Speeder.

The speed should be relatively stable, and should be as accurate a measurement of how fast your connection can handle as possible.

Update............an engineer callled and said "The cable to your house dosent have enough capacity, weel fit a new one............engineers call, dig up garden, fit new c"High Capacity" cable........guess what-no difference..........call to Virgin who send out another engineer........who checks it on a laptop and says "your right you not getting the correct speed.............its due to the UBR serving you that will not pass suffecient capacity, but as you the only one whos complained, they wont put a new one in just for you............ball back in my court............
