TOMTOM USA Maps / SD cards

Just got a Tom Tom, never had a sat nav before so excuse me if this is a dumb question...
Going to the states soon and wondered can you rent the SD cards? Or is it a case of buy one and ebay it once the holiday is over??
At £65 they seem a bit steep to me??
I save so I can spend.

I don't think you can rent the SD card - you can certainly rent a SatNav with US maps for around £60 which will be sent to your home address, then you return it when you get back. I'm in the same position - I have a UK & ROI Tomtom with no SD slot, so might have to do that too.

Any SD card that you get needs to be "married" to your TT for it to work. If you buy a second hand SD card make sure that you can transfer ownership legitimately via TomTom or it will not work in your M/C. The web is a big place and there are sites out there that could help you.

Always take my Tom Tom with us but please be aware that the first time you switch it on it could take a full 5 mins to lock on to a satalite so best to park up and wait for it to lock on before you set off. The next time it will lock on quickly just like in UK (you may also have the same thing in reverse when you come back)

Another quick thing - if you are somewhere hot do not leave it in the window for any lengh of time whilst you are not in the car. My first one was on a PDA and I left it in the car in Texas whilst we were eating lunch (1 hour max) and came out to find it melted / fused inside.

We bought ours on ebay but some rental companies allow you to book a sat nav system with your car.

We've used our three times now so priceless really. You never know when you might use it again so I do think it worth the expense. Our recent stay was in a villa in Florida and without tom tom we would never have found it in a million years.

Ive just bought a map from the TomTom website yesturday (whole different story - no room for it to fit blah blah) but anyway, noticed they have a 'mapshare' going on...that might be worth looking into
