What age did you have your boy cat snipped at?

When should I get Charlie the snip?

Charlie is an exotic shorthair (a short haired Persian) & he's 5 months old.

The vet agrees to leave him as long as possible (he keeps Persians), Persians & Exotics are supposed to be big cats & delaying the snip as long as possible allows them to mature & fill out (his dad & granddad were enormous:eek: ). The vet says the minute he does any mature stuff book him in.

BUT on Saturday morning I caught him grabbing Molly (9 month old girl Persian - who's "done") by the neck & putting his body over hers. He wasn't "doing" anything, but I think he might be trying or learning:confused:

He does play fight (wrestle) with her, but this looked more like trying to mate than play fighting.

Do you think nows the time?

I had Ted done about one, but he was indoors & an only cat.

I had my two boys done at 5 1/2 months, I would have preferred to do it earlier but my vets (or rather the receptionists who it's hard to get past!) kept saying 6 months. I took one of them in for another matter and they said he was big enough so they both got snipped and chipped a few days later.

Do male cats start spraying stuff around your house when they become mature? If so, I'd get it done as soon as you can.

    Yes they can/might do.

Its nice to let him mature as much as possible, but I don't think leaving it as late as I left Ted is an option.

5 1/2 - 6 months is normally ideal time, all my cats i've had over the years (male and female) have been done at that time.

5 months-ish, certainly before they start spraying, if they don't get a chance to know they can spray it's more likely they never will, but if they start spraying having them snipped won't necessarily stop them after.

I'd certainly have it done before kitty time gets into full swing, it'll be a minefield of raging kitty hormones out there very soon.

Do any of you think it stops them filling out or reaching their true size, having it done early?

My vet maintains that the snip causes the boys to become extra cuddly. That's for moggies though, perhaps it's different for your particular breed.

My wee Dylan got done at five months - there was a rather obvious "protrusion" under his tail area which the vet noticed. Poor Dylan wasn't expecting that....

You can see the protrusion clearly, he has quite a big pair!
