Who is the best placed to replace Brown to lead Labour through the recession?

One politician I have always liked is Jack Straw, he seems rather plain speaking and humble. That said I don't religiously follow political stories so if I have missed any involving him and fraud/corruption/drugs/spanking parlours then please disregard this comment

David Cameron of course!
With his care for his disabled son, and his appreciation of the importance of the NHS, he is far more of a Labour figure than are most of the present cabinet.
OTOH since the recession seems to be really bad, what is needed is not so much a charismatic leader as a brilliant economist. And while Brown has all the charm and charisma of a rotten potato, he is intellectually brilliant, and might well go on to save the global economy.0 -

Do take a look...Make up your Own Mind..Needless to say Sky did Not mention the "Asian" bit0 -
I think Jack Straw missed his moment or perhaps he never had the top job in mind but carefully aimed for what he now has ?
The Millibands are far too niaive and inexperienced, and not trusted in some quarters. I can't see a party leader who looks like a sixth former conveying much clout.
Frank Field woudn't want it, Alan Johnson is transparently the current John Prescott - a link between the party and the unions and nothing more.
Ed Balls - never in a million years, too many enemies
Harriet Harman by default ? You never can tell !.................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 -
I don't know who I would like to see in charge but I know that I dislike Gordon in a way that's almost visceral. I formerly voted Labour but they had already lost my vote way before the last election with their ridiculous frittering away of personal freedoms and unwarranted tinkering in the affairs of other nations. I also think that the benefits culture that they've allowed to burgeon has done a massive disservice to the previously loud and proud working class.
Personally I'd like to see a government of all the talents, with a team working on the economy, not just the chancellor. I'd have both Cable and Clarke involved but not Darling or Osborne as they are both too lightweight with insufficient real world experience.
Incidentally, I just tried a little experiment. I typed into google
"who is the best labour politician", using the inverted commas to get a result to the exact phrase. Guess what? In the whole of the web there were no matches. I'm now even more scared.
No results found for "who is the best labour politician.

There is a team that works on the economy - it's called the civil service. The Treasury civil servants are the same whichever political party governs.
A Government of National Unity would shut the voters up, but it could easily spent most of its time engaged in internal power struggles..................

But, with respect, they do not always get listened to, nor do they always remain the same because if they disagree with a particular agenda they can find themselves out on their backsides pdq;)"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -
David Miliband is the best option. He has the intellectual rigour required and a certain amount of likeability. No idea what the Labour Party Kremlinology is about him.
Alan Johnson has already said he isn't up to the job which doesn't inspire confidence. Not sure he has the intellectual clout required.
Ed Balls, please no. His one job in the last 15 years has been to run the economy- how well do you think he did that?
Harriet Harman- you must be joking surely.
And I agree with whoever said Frank Field. Unfortunately he only lasted a year as a minister before he was sacked. You see, we can't have clearly talented people in politics, that wouldn't do.
Or Vince Cable if the SDP/Tony Benn/ Michael Foot had never happened0
