First time I planted shallots and onions I put them about an inch below the soil. They rotted:o I now plant them with the shoulder and tip above the soil. You have to go around after the birds and put them back until they sprout though, as the birds love to pull them up:D I've put 100 onions in and 24 elephant garlic, but the garlic hasn't even sprouted yet whereas the onions have 3 inch green shoots:confused:

Thanks SEE - What about the Spacing between rows? How much space have you given yours? I'm trying to fit another row in (See last Question) and not sure I will have the room?

I have about 10 cm between my rows of shallots and garlic so 10 inches is fine. Put another row in, the garlic should be out before the shallots anyway.

You'd normally want a little space between rows because it's easier to weed between the rows without damaging the bulbs.

I have planted garlic in flower pots and potatoes in compost bags, can they get too wet with this rain we are having in the midlands?

Not as long as there are adequate drainage holes in the pots and bags. If one does start to look like an extra in the battle of the Somme, take action!
