Have I Planted my Shallots too Deep ?
Can anyone help ?
I'm a Newbie to all this Growing Veg lark
Last week I planted a row of Shallots and I think I've mis-read the packet and planted them deeper than I should have??
I was just browsing the web looking for advice on when and how often to water them and I noticed on the RHS Website that it says "When they are planted, the tips at least should still be protruding from the soil surface"
Mine are about an inch below the surface - What should I do? Can I dig them up and start again or do you think disturbing them now will have a negative effect? Will they still grow if they are this deep?
Oh and while I'm here.... does anyone have any advice on watering? I read that Garlic doesnt like too much water and I have Garlic next to the Shallots so I was worried I would over water. How often should I be watering them and how much?
Thanks

Hi,
Mine have been in acouple of weeks and are just peeping through the soil. Last year I felt I put them in a little too deep but as they grew and the weather became warmer I used to ease away a little of the soil around them to let the sun at them and they grew perfectly.
All is not lost. I hardly ever water.

I have planted them a bit low in the past, never noticed a difference.0

Thanks Guys.... Panic Over then!
I'll Keep a good eye on them and if they look like they need a bit of help i'll push some of the soil away from the Top (Thanks for the Tip Truly Madly)Have you got your onions in as well?
I'm only growing Shallots this year as I'm not sure that I've got the space for bigger onions, they have gone in next to the Garlic and soon to be followed by Leeks, Cabbage, Broccoli & Cauliflour (and lots more in Pots on the Patio)
Wish me Luck - Its my first proper year of growing Veggies !!2009 Savings & Winnings so far....Pigsback £15.06 +[strike]£40[/strike] M&S Vouchers + £20 New Look + TNS £15 Capital Bonds + Qype Ninja Goodies + £50 Virgin VoucherSealed Pot Challenge #589 - Target £1500 -
Hi, Can you grow shallots in an old dustbin like you can potatoes? If so how many would you produce, I wouldnt mind doing my own pickled after growing them.0

Shallots don't grow too deep, you could maybe grow them in something that is not as deep and save your bin fro something that needs more depth.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

I have a wooden box about a foot deep and probably 18" square, do you reckon that would do? But how many shallots would i expect? What else grows deep like potatoes?0 -

Based on square foot gardening techniques you should be able to get 4 shallots per square foot (12 x 12 inches). However this does assume good quality soil.0 -
Me again....
The Good News is that my Shallots are now peeping through the soil :T
So, I was thinking of planting another row but I dont know if I'll have enough space... What do you think?
I have a row of Shallots then a row of Garlic (about 10" spacing between rows) and I was thinking of having another row of shallots next to that... but I need to keep as much space as possible for my other Veg.
So my question is what is the least amount of space i can leave between the Garlic and Shallots? Do they grow quite wide? I read somewhere that you could plant shallots quite easily in gaps so it seems that they dont need much spacing - Is that right?
