door bells

hi, my first post!

i just wanna ask if anyone knows anything about door bells... the house i moved into recently (its 6yrs old) has a door bell that has the batteries missing. it needs 4 batteries, and i have tried all sizes from 9v, d, c. none of them fit, and i'm really confused.

i am also thinking of buying a cordless door bell (since i cant find the right batteries!), but how do i remove the existing button thats on my door frame now??

thanks!

  • If you are getting a cordless doorbell and you have a PVC front door you will need a special one. Standard cordless doorbells do not work through PVC doors.

To remove the existing bell push , on most you prise off the cover and then you will see the fixing screws underneath. If the old bell is ok you could fit a transformer and plug it into the mains.

I have a pvc door and got a cheap (under £5) cordless doorbell from Wilkinsons. It just sticks on the door casing. It works fine.

    hi! thanks for your replies!

its definately not a or aa sized batteries, because the size seem more like C or D. but they both dont fit.

is the existing doorbell wired up? and would i need to removed the wires b4 i replace it with a cordless one? (i think i have a wooden door).

    thanks!
  • We bought one years ago, it never worked properly!

Phoned the manufacturer and they said that their cordless doorbells do not work through PVC doors, I went to Local electrical shop and he said the same!

I then purchased another one which would go through PVC doors and it worked fine. I did wonder why the hell they made one that would not work through a PVC door at the time. It was a long time ago, maybe 15 years. Perhaps technology has moved on since then and they might all work now!

Mate often has problems with his as about ten people on his street have one, This can casue problems if they are all tuned to the same frquency lol. It's good for playing knock and run though :D
