when a child moves out to another family member how long do tax credits run on

I know you are entitled to continue to recieve child benefit for 3 weeks after another person first claims but what about tax credits? are you entitled to it until the child benefit stops?

please help as I don't want to be overpaid but I also don't want to give up what we are entitled to!

thank you

If your child is not living with you then you are not entitled to the Tax Credits. As far as I am aware they will stop when the child benefit stops.
  • as above if the child doesnt live with you tax credit will stop
when a young person reachs 20 childbenefit and taax credits will cease
  • yeah the child is only 14 but has gone to live with another relative I know we are definitely not entitled to it for a long period just wanted to know if there was a run on period as there is for child benefit? or if it ceases as soon as the child moves out.

Ours stopped from the day DS moved out, or I think it was the following Monday actually.

That was child benefit and tax credits.

He was 16 but still classed as in full time education, so same circumstances for benefit purposes.

It can work out harder when the parents claim the move is a temporary measure. Can you not ask them to speed the change over by getting them to inform CB and CTC that he is now living with you.

The OP... who happens (if my understanding of other posts is correct) has a new child that they are now looking after. If my understanding is incorrect then I apologise.

This is a quote from a previous thread you started. So which is it, do you have an extra child living with you or has your child gone to live with someone else?

Can any one help, I can NEVER get through on the 08453021444 number I have tried at all times of day from 8am till 7pm I get charged every time I ring but just get a message saying calls are recorded you are paying for this call and then immediatley after it says sorry we can't answer your call doesn't even ring once,
been like that for couple of months now, and I really need to talk to them, I put in a claim for an additional child who came to live with us, at the same time I informed taxcredits.
tc adjusted our claim straight away, so we told housing benefit office of the change in circumstances but as child benefit is not sorted they can not put him on as a dependant but they took tax credit adjustment into account and have now stopped our ct and h benefits

I have emailed cb but no answer.

    HELP PLEASE SOMEONE

If the child no longer lives with you then you should be phoning the child benefit people and the tax credits people and tell them that X is now living with Y at Blah address as of ??/??/2009.
From your earlier thread you recognise how difficult it was for you to get benefits sorted out.
  • I'm sorry that me asking for help on more than one occasion seems to of annoyed you, my last post on this subject was a while ago. the child came to me and has now moved on. for reasons which I do not wish to discuss here. my frustration was with cb helpline and slowness, I do not wish to have anything I am not entitled to but after being royaly messed around by various people and with redundancy on the cards in the next week or so for my partner I can not afford to lose a couple of weeks money that we are entitled to.
