Surely at 19/20yrs old he ought to be able to deal with this himself rather than getting his parents to talk to their parents?0 -
What are the option for my student son? The fuel bill with Eon is in his name. he has paid his 3rd of bill but can't get the money off other 2. They want him to set up some payment scheme but if it comes from his bank then he will have to try to get money from them each month or he will end up paying. Also as he has already paid his 3rd he does not want to be involved in the payments. Are there any options whichwill jut take care of the outstanding amount?
Could he arrange that his fellow flatmates set up standing orders that transfer money into your son's account each month. This is what I did when I was the one paying the bill (s).
Good luck

The thing to do (coming from a former student with experience) is to put the bill in the name of a completely fictional person when you move in. We did it for years. It's fine so long as you pay the bill.
I can hear the PC brigade self destructing as I type, and throwing themselves off of bridges and all that. Fine, you put YOUR name on the bill.
He's 100% liable I'm afraid. If he REALLY wants to get the others back then all he needs to do is to work through the holidays, and the whole lot of them will lose their exemption for Council Tax.
Students have the funny idea that because they're poor hard-up students, that they don't have to pay any bills.
The bet is that each of them has a separate bill? All he has to do is to pay this one outright, and then refuse to pay theirs. ;-) Touche.0 -
I'm still owed almost 100 quid in past bills for our internet by one of my house mates who is absolutely atrocious with money. Its fine though because if she doesn't cough up on next loan day straight away I'm just blocking her internet access through the router and telling her she's cut off until she pays up
I can't wait for July when I move in with my fianc!e and am rid of worries over bills.trying to become a moneysaving student0 -
There are several things to try:
1. ASK them to pay by a certain date (7 days), and say that if they don't, he'll have to take them to court. If they don't pay in 7 days, write to them stating the same. It only costs £30 to start a small claims procedure, and I presume they're ALL on the rental agreement?
2. Contact the Landlord and explain the situation. Send LL a copy of the elec bill, along with proof that HE has paid his 1/3, and the others haven't. The LL might deduct it from the deposit.
3. Contact the parents of the other two students and ask them to pay.
4. sell all their items on ebay whilst they're out to cover the costs!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
personally i would pay the bill and ask for a final reading then have it cut off bet theyd soon pay up then0

Probably the best thing to do is pay the whole bill and try sort out the situation afterwards. I've been through this countless times after living with some really rubbish people... you don't want the debt to be passed to a collections agency, you don't want threats of ballifs and companies ringing you every hour of the day. So pay it, then take it up with the housemates.
It's unfair, it sucks and it shouldn't happen, but there are some sh*tty people in the world, and they'll screw you over for all you've got. Sad but true!
I really like the ficticious person idea... can energy companies check against electoral registers for stuff like that though? Also, when the payments are coming from completely different names, would they care? An interesting point to consider.0 -
Hi ceewash,
As far as E.ON would be concerned, the name on the bill is liable to make payment. Any other tenants owing part of the bill just becomes a third party dispute.
The bill can have many names on, there isn’t a limit. The issue is the other tenants have to be the ones who request their details are added to the account; your son can not do this for them.
My advice to anyone sharing bills in situations like this is always having all the occupants’ names on the utility accounts. If not someone will always lose out and others will benefit unfairly.
