new front door needed

Options
I have been quoted £500 for the fitting of a new front door and locks to my flat. It does need to be a fire door but this price is absurd. Anyone have any good contacts ? London Central / South

thanks

Is that just for fitting? - if so it's absurd!
If it includes supply then it might not be bad depending on type of door.

Oh, didn't even consider it might not include the price of a door!

    1/2 hr firecheck door £60-00 ,5 lever mortice sashlock £35-00,5 lever mortice deadlock £30-00,door closure £30-00,Fire rated hinges(3) £7-00,intumescent strip £20-00,Handles £20-00,letter plate £20-00

Materials total £222-00 ( good quality materials)

Labour works out about £275-00 (door fitting isn't rocket science)

Im in Sussex so not sure about London prices, but If the labour is about £275-00 its only a days work at most..........

Depends on quality of fittings really...

PS.. I don't do London sorry............Had 3 weeks in Barclay square ,that was enough for me ..:D

Wouldn't you need more than a half hour fire door as a front door? Appreciate that it's not a new build but using common sense, you'd want to be safe for as long as possible if there is a fire outside the flat. 60 quid is a properly cheap door - I'd spend more than that on an internal door. Fair enough of you like really cheap doors.

Actually £60-00 will buy a decent 1/2 hr firecheck door, even 4 or 6 panel moulded ones rather than a "flush" firecheck door.OP would have to check building regs for guidance on 1/2 or 1 hr firecheck doors. Most people don't have a clue about quality when it comes to joinery, doors from DIY stores tend to be rubbish ,they may look the same as better quality doors but aren,t. You can ,depending upon style, timber etc spend up to £800-00 for a standard off the peg doors, all depends on door spec. Finally with regards fire ratings if the door frame has a side light which has pyroglass and 1/2 hr rating there isnt a lot of point having a door with 1hr rating, fire will penetrate the sidelight first.

Howdens joinery have some quite good doors, even "gothic oak" which is oak vaneered(£199) but the same door elsewhere is £699-00 at other builders merchants...........Just checked, theres no difference in price between 1/2hr and 1 hr..

We buy most of our doors from Howdens but I'd never spend 60 quid on a brand new door for a property I might want to sell. In fact I'm still not convinced that even they would sell a decent front door for 60 quid.

I'm assuming this is an internal door in a flat. I've never seen a sidelight in a shared hall and if it's an outside door then you would really want a nicer door.

Howdens also do a solid oak door. Just had one, supplied and fitted. :T

This is a once only purchase and makes a big difference to the appearance of your property. I would suggest you do not skimp, particularly on the lock.

They're actually quite common ,especially if the hallway in the property is dark as they can let more natural light in(usually called a borrowed light), usually have obscure glass in.The jobs that ive worked on use pyroglass(which is far better looking than the dated "georgian wired" glass. You wont get a decent "front " door for £60-00 but if its in a block of flats and a fire rated door is required your options are limited,if you have one specially made then the company making the door has to be an "approved" manufacturer with fire ratings.
For £60-00 you can buy a 4 or 6 panelled fire rated door that is fine for an appartment door(not open to the weather).
