Cheque Paid In Without Paying In Slip

Hello All,

I have a very unfortunate and frustrating situation regarding a member of my staff who made a mistake when paying in a cheque to my current account.

The bank is Alliance and Leicester, and she went to the post office to deposit a cheque for me. The cashier gave her a postal deposit envelope in which to put the cheque. She forgot to put a payingin-slip along side the cheque in this envelope and then handed the envelope back to the post office cashier who said they would post it off to A&L.

The money was never credited to the account and worse still, the cheque payee is insisting that the money has cleared from his account. I have since called A&L and they say they they have no record of this cheque what so ever.

I just wondered, does anyone seem to know the procedure A&L (or other banks) use in the scenario where a customer posts a cheque without a paying in slip? Surely there must be a procedure which prevents the cheque just being cashed?

A&L staff are not the most helpful - 4 calls to customer services today and not really getting anywhere. If anyone could shed any light on what should happen here, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
CTB

might need to get customer to get copy of 'cleared' cheque from their bank(offer to pay any copy costs) - should have any detailson the back as to which a/c it was credited to..

  • Different banks have different procedures.

Some banks would apply the credit to a suspense account to put it through clearing cycle (on the basis that the cleared item can then be quickly transferred to the correct customer account at a later date).

Some banks might simply return the cheque to the bank it was drawn on, with a covering letter explaining the circumstances. The cheque would then be returned to the drawer (uncashed).

If the cheque HAS been cleared, this would indicate the former has happened, unless someone at A&L has mistakenly added it to another customer's account (which is unlikely if the cheque was made out to your name).

Either A&L (possibly) or the drawer's bank (definitely) can source a copy of the paid cheque to confirm the account it was credited to (although a fee would almost certainly apply and if the latter the request would probably have to be made by the drawer of the cheque).

I do not have knowledge of A&L's procedures though - so someone else might be able to provide better/more accurate/more complete information.

You surely put your account number on the cheque reverse?

Ask the drawer to obtain a copy of the paid cheque. The process audit trail on the reverse will identify where it's gone to.
