Halifax Online - Cardcash and upgrade

Hi.

This morning I logged into my Halifax bank account via Halifax Online. I have a Cardcash account with Electron.

This morning I noticed next to my account details a button that said 'Upgrade your account'. If I click on it it says about upgrading to either an Ultimate Reward Account or 'Reward Account'. I know these appear to be fee generating accounts, but the information on them says about Overdrafts being available and also Visa Debit cards.

My question is that, does anyone who follows this new upgrade route, get a proper debit card instead of Electron? And are you subject to any further Credit Checking? Any responses would be greatfully received.

Thanks.

The Ultimate Reward charges a fee for a range of insurances and other benefits.

The Reward pays you £5 a month if you fund the account with more than £1,000. There are some interesting overdraft fees should you ever go overdrawn though.

If their application to upgrade is successful.

Yes. Your application will be credit scored.

Follow the linky to see if these accounts are really what you want.
  • If on online banking you get a chance to upgrade then usually 9 times outof 10 you will be accepted.

You can upgrade from cardcash to reward current account. This account is a visa debit card with cheque book and overdraft facility. overdraft tho is charged £1 per day when you in your overdraft and £5 per day when over your overdraft limit.

Or you could upgrade to the ultimate reward current account. There is a fee of £12.50 a month and you are chagred interest on the overdraft.

When it says upgrade your electron card isnt upgraded - basically a new account is set up so you would have 2 bank accounts. very useful as visa dont charge transaction fees on a visa electron card.

I don't think that is correct, otherwise it wouldn't be an upgrade would it? The Halifax can change account types on their system so you would keep the same sort code and account number but be sent a new card and cheque book etc.
  • The 9 times out of 10 probably doesn't apply here, as I think Halifax have just implemented this "upgrade" button across the board, regardless of a customer's personal circumstances (ie I doubt that there is anyone on Halifax Online with a non-fee paying current account that doesn't have this "upgrade" button visible).

Should you apply for the "upgrade" it will be credit scored. I applied for the Reward account last week which I got declined for it (dunno why as have full current account with Natwest with O/D & Maestro and can pretty much get anything I apply for now)

Logged into Halifax online this morning as my credit card it on there plus an old cashcard account from when I was 15 which isn't used and the upgrade button is on mine too so I think it must have appeared on everyones pages.

Only wanted a Reward account for the free £5 a month but oh well I'm more than happy with Natwest.

Well it does (or should) work like that because other people have reported on this forum that when they have changed account type, e.g. from the High Interest Current Account to Reward account they get a new card issued but their account number and sort code stay the same. I can't vouch for whether the staff at the Halifax always process an upgrade like that, but it is certainly possible.
