I'd not recommend installing AVG 8 as that tends to slow things down. Have you stopped the ZA services? Just shut it down. If you want a HIBs like teatimer, winpatrol is good.0

Thanks, this seems to have worked, Zone Alarm has been successfully uninstalled; I have also went into the control panel and switched Windows firewall on as requested.
You indicated that I should switch Spybots teatimer off, what is this and how do I switch it off?

Turn off Spybots 'TEA TIMER' mode ~
Open Spybot
Change Mode (Top) to ADVANCED
Select TOOLS then RESIDENT
UNTICK 'Resident TEA TIMER' (Leave 'SD Helper' TICKED)
tea timer stops certain registries from being changed which is good. But it can also stop legit programs from working (which is bad):idea:0 -
