We are moving shortly, NTL do not have a broadband service where we are moving to, so we have had to go with sky and they tell me the service will come down the phone line.

I use a lap top with a router to connect to the internet, will I have to use this with the sky service can anyone tell me please.........??????

We have only ever used Sky for TV programmes before never for the internet.

Thanks in advance.

Sky will send their own router , you just need to set up the Laptop to connect to that

Sky use normal adsl internet not satellite internet (which is very expensive)

BTW NTL is now known as Virgin Media and they do offer a broadband service

I know that Virgin Media offer a broadband service we are on it now, but at the new house they do not have the cables laid in and have no plans in the near future to do so. I have been with NTL/Virgin since they first introduced their broadband service back in 2000.

Do I have to tell them I need a wireless router????? They nearly drove me daft this afternoon when I phoned, I had to change the installation date, the frist twice after hanging on for over half an hour both times, they cut me off without completing the change, it must have cost me a small fortune in phone costs today to get the service installed. I just hope its worth the trouble!!!

OP, why do you say you 'have ' to go with Sky? You could have chosen any ADSL provider you liked, you just need a BT line. Sky and Virgin do not have a monopoly on broadband.
You can still get Virgin, but this would be ADSL not cable service-it's called Virgin National.

Indeed, that puzzled me as well, there are far better ISP's around IMO.

I am with Sky, and the service is way better than when I was with BT:
    • You to be a Sky TV customer to get it.
    • It comes down the phone line (as all ADSL does).
    • The service included a wireless router (with 4 wired Ethernet poerts too); mine is a Netgear unit re-branded as Sky and with customised firmware (so you can only use it for Sky).

We went with Sky because OH wanted the programmes you cannot get on whatsit thingy.......freeview....sorry mind is scrambled trying to cope with everything.........

When I spoke to Virgin, they did not tell me they had any other sort of service........the sky package is actually cheaper than the Virgin one we were on and I got a cheapie deal on the box thingy after complaining about the cost.

My friend has BT and has had a lot of problems with it, its more expensive too so that was out.

We are contactcted for 12 months once the time is up I intend to check on the freeview programmes and see if we can opt out.

So that means I have a router for cable to get rid of, or do you suggest I keep it 'in case' Virgin do lay in fibreoptic cables in the near future?

Virgin may want the router back if you are terminating the service. If they do subsequently cable your area, you would get a new one as part of the package.
Did you look at Freesat as an alternative to Sky?-this gets you all of the Sky channels except the premium ones-and no subscription to pay.
