Because the stock market is acting like a headless chicken at the moment. They know this could very well be the bottom (although it might not). They don't want to lose out - they are as greedy as the bankers. Then again, tomorrow they may wake up and feela bit down and sell everything again!

Markets are not rational at the moment. Well, they are in that they should be pretty damn low, but I dont think the vaious spiky movements are rational.

UK normally lags 6 - 12 months behind the US.

The US dragged the world into this mess, and they will lead us out.

The really worrying thing is you actually believe that

its like pistons in a car engine, 2 go up 2 go down, and vice versa. Trouble is for every rotation a fraction is lost forever.

By this time, the government is probably bankrupt... and they don't have the Chinese buying up all their debt.

Can someone explain why the DOW and FTSE are going up? I have read that it’s because of huge amounts of toxic debt being removed and the QE. Can someone explain why these things are good and people see fit to invest in stocks? Surely it’s like burying nuclear waste, it gets rid of it, but it will ultimately contaminate the soil and nothing will be able to grow and QE will lead to inflation. Is it investors trying to make a quick buck?

The rise in the markets is attributable to a multitude of factors. Rio Tinto rose over 13% on the back of prices in the metal markets. So totally unrelated to toxic debt and QE. This share price movement alone would have impacted on the FTSE.

Sometimes the news coverage is just too simplistic and edited down for soundbite coverage.

Daily stock market movements are just noise really. Look at YoY changes to see the bigger picture.

Yup - of course the UK doesn't need any structural adjustments to its economy, house prices right, trade deficit sustainable, public spending & debt levels all manageable. Yup you're 100% right

Now now that's not true. I am talking about share prices here, they go up and they go down. Personally I hope they go up. And unemployment falls. And we have a recovery. And we all keep our jobs.

i got a rate rise and a promotion yesterday. does this mean the bottom has been reached? (or is it because they are cutting the deadwood so need good people who can carry them through - actually better stop spending so much time on this forum - all research you know).
