Refused card I didn't ask for!?

Would anyone know why or what I can do about a letter from Halifax refusing me a credit card I have not requested?
I have never had problems with my credit score yet this letter is saying because of bad credit score they will not let me have a card.
(I already have 3 anyway which I pay in full every month)
Its not an affiliate card by any chance is it? i.e. have you applied for anything lately cos Halifax do affiliate with other cards (marbles/aqua etc) See here: http://www.marbles.com/about-us.aspx
If not then unusual for branch to blanket apply, its against all the FSA principles and I doubt a BM would admit to such going-on's?
You could have failed the score cos if you did not apply, they fraudster may have failed something that triggered a N Hunter fail (fraud) for example bank details or house owner/renter etc etc - loads of scenarios really but halifax should be your first-port-of-call.
