Refused card I didn't ask for!?

Would anyone know why or what I can do about a letter from Halifax refusing me a credit card I have not requested?
I have never had problems with my credit score yet this letter is saying because of bad credit score they will not let me have a card.
(I already have 3 anyway which I pay in full every month)

Sounds like someone's trying to apply for stuff in your name. I'd contact Halifax, ask where the application came from (online, phone, a form, branch etc) and go from there.

If you have nothing to hide and did'nt request the card I would ask for a copy of the documentation requesting the card. This could be a case of fraud tht needs investigating.

The downside is that your credit rating is not as good as you think it is.

You confidently state that you have three credit cards anyway! Are you sure you pay them off in full. Any mortgage or rent arrears. Are all your affairs in order.

I am in my forties and only need one credit card, what makes you different.

    Only you can answer that.

  • I had the same letter for the halifax. The only thing is that I applied for a non-secured loan and it seems ( according to the banch manager) that if you do this, it automatically applies you for one of there credit cards too!!! I have complained to the halifax's head office and am waiting for a reply!!

It might happen that whoever has applied for a credit card on your name, has applied for several at the same time; if you apply for loads at the same time, you credit rating goes down as they think you are desperate for cash all of a sudden.

Why don't you ask for a credit report to an agency? They arrive pretty quick, and you can check yourself what's on your name.

If they have done that what battleaxe says, that's really bad. I mean, you should always be fully aware that you are applying for a credit card when filling any other document. If they have applied for one on your name without your explicit consent and knowledge, you might be able to claim.

Have you checked your credit file? Halifax have not said that they sent it in error, so it could still be someone trying to get a card in your name. They might have managed to get one from another bank?
You can get a free credit check from Experion - if you go through quidco you get cashback, but I have no idea how much these days (used to be about £5), but it is free for a month.

The statutory report is £2 and takes about a week by post.
A little longer to wait, but some people have found these trials difficult to cancel and you do have to supply payment details.
If youa re concerned about giving out payment details or cancelling (hanging on the phone for an hour) and don't mind waiting a week or so then get the £2 reports from Experian and Equifax.
You are really better off getting all 3 for a complete picture,

call credit is available without payment details from
    https://www.annualcreditreport.co.uk
and I've had no issue with spam.

I would suggest that you check your credit files as a matter of urgency. Somebody could be applying for credit in your name. They may have already applied for other credit cards/store cards/loans and this one from halifax may just have been refused due to the numerous searches.

Had happened to my OH when someone applied for credit and we luckily received one card with £500 limit and £450 balance transferred from it. Seemed like an online application done on a saturday. We recievd card on tuesday but even after numerous calls Vanquis refused to talk to us as the application was not ours(As we said we had not applied). A few threatening letters later they then backtracked and cancelled the card and showed it as settled.

When i checked our file i found 2 store cards had also been applied for luckily we stopped those within days of application and hence no major harm done. Though Vanquis put a cifas record which was finally removed a year later after we threatened to take them to court.
