Advice in keeping frog spawn to grow into frogs

Margaretclare - you will hate the fact that we sometimes get the newts out & put them in a "pond replicator" (small fish tank with bits from the pond) for a few hours to see what they get up to!
Newts are a protected species and can only be handled by someone licensed to do so. It's not what I think that matters!
At the agricultural college my daughter attended, where we go every year to their prizegiving, last year they had 3,000 great crested newts in their ponds. While she was there, she was able to observe how they counted them, but she wasn't allowed to touch them herself, just watch.
Do you actually mean newts, and do you know the difference between a frog and a newt?
We didn't need to take frog-spawn from the wild. We just had a pond made, didn't stock it with fish (fish and tadpoles do not mix!) and the following spring there they were, busy doing what nature intended. Everyone who has a garden, no matter how small, should have a small pond for the wildlife. Sit back and watch what happens.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

There are lots of ways to make a pond safe.0 -
'Collecting spawn is an excellent way of studying the amazing change or ‘metamorphosis’ from tadpole to adult.
Keeping spawn is a very useful conservation exercise as the so-called ‘common frog’ is on the decline. Once you have reared the tiny frogs they can be released back into the wild.'

Few years old, but still...My TV is broken!

I used to gather the frog spawn from my pond, and keep it in a large plastic container filled with water from the pond. I put some stones or a small rock in it and watched them develop. It was great a child to see them go through the life cylce. Used to love putting them on my hand when they were tiny and seeing them jump off.
Now we never get any frog spawn because my dad used to chuck it in the bin cos he didnt like it in his pond. grr!0 -

true, but there are also lots of instances where people havent, and children have died,
not wanting to start a row or anything... just stating the facts.0 -

Of course there have been accidents. I just presume that anyone who puts a pond in their garden where children are likely to be would have the common sense that I did to make it safe.0 -

ah ha! and there is your downfall! assuming that the general public have common sense! lol0 -

However it is a law that is rarely acted upon and if you do it, please ask the permission of the landowner and only take a little bit.
There is also a risk of spreading disease and metamorphosed tadpoles leave the pond to live on the wildlife rich edges and have a much higher rate of survival in their natural environment.
It's much better to create a small pond yourself to encourage the frogs to inhabit your garden naturally.
What is this disease? Is it for the frogs or humans.
I am going to go for the washing up bowl in the garden instead of it in the bedroom. How do I create the water to top up the pond with... cool boils water????? I would take some water from the owners pond with there permission.“…the ‘insatiability doctrine – we spend money we don’t have, on things we don’t need, to make impressions that don’t last, on people we don’t care about.” Professor Tim Jackson
