Call made and confirmed that the new retention certificate is on it's way...... But still not showing as funds gone from my account yet. Glad I managed to talk to someone.
Glad you're sorted.
Don't worry about the cheque not being cashed - it will be soon enough. But at least you now know that they have the renewal and you don't need to worry.

Daft question here but I am about to send away my documents to have my plate assigned to my car. What happens when I sell my car ? do I just put the plates on retention and then reassign to my next car...if so what plates will go on my own car when i put the plates on retention.....does it get the old number back automatically..or do the DVLA reassign a new one, and I just get the plates made up accordingly ?0

Your current normal plate will be "voided" for now whilst your private plate is on vehicle.
When you sell vehicle you need to retain or transfer the plate PRIOR to sale (paperwork advises 6wks in advance).
When you do this 99% of the time your original plate will be re-assigned to the vehicle and if you've kept the plates then you put those back on when DVLA authorises it. If another plate is issued DVLA will give you a certificate to take to a number plate supplier to get new plates made up, which you pay for.

Sorry to hijack the tread but I have private plate on my car that I wish to remove and put on retention. Only problem is I stripped the car 18 months ago for a respray which I never got round to. The MOT and tax ran out 18 months ago too. A friend of a friend now wishes to buy the car. I would like to sell but how, if possible, do I remove the plate?0

To retain plates a car must be taxed and MOT'd

One suggestion - come to an agreement with the buyer that you can keep the plate, once the car is restored & back on the road. Put it in writing, to cover yourself. But don't rely on it being watertight if your friend decides not to honour the agreement.
Here's a precis of the rules:

Unfortunately, you fall outside the 12-month window for removing the registration number
