Just a quick question....

Ever helful DVLA dont seem to concerned but I am a little anxious.

I have had the renewal reminder, and have sent away the cheque for a 3 year renewal of a number held on retention. Now, I sent this 7 days ago, have checked my bank balance and there is no sign of the cheque clearing the account. Now... if this is lost in the post, or they dont get it by the 1st - I lose the plate and any title to it... (why cant I pay direct debit or card payment???)

All the contacts on the DVLA paperwork state that this cannot be discussed on the phone! I wish we could all run businesses and services like this!!

Any idea if the DVLA hold payment until 1st of the month before processing the cheque.

No help to you now, but I always send mine by recorded delivery, I simply don't trust DVLA.

They are always slow at doing them. I don't think they process the retention renewal until the date it is due.

I worry about mine everytime but it goes through ok.

Fingers crossed time, I'll keep checking the account until the 1st! It is daft - you can only apply to extend the retention from the 1st of the month preceeding it, and it must be with them by the end of the month. The reminder comes through by about the 5th or 6th of the month - giving a small window for any errors. At least they are now able to extend for 3 years instead of 1.

Yes that was news to me, good news ... Thanks.

I assume that it is £75 for 3 years?

    Yep £75 for 3 years.

Good and bad for this though....

good - it is pegged at the price today and any increase in retention costs wont be included

bad - Must remember if I move to inform DVLA and also to remember in 3 years to look out for the retention renewal or to send my certificate away.

I'm not sure if I assigned the plate in the meantime if I would get a refund?

The plate is for my son though....... and he is 5 so I dont think that will be a problem.

If you call the DVLA, they will be able to tell you whether they have received your renewal application. It's an 0870 number, but....you can ring the switchboard (a landline number 01792782341) and ask to be put through to Cherished Transfers (customer services). We ring often (run a number plate business) and they are always helpful.
They will definitely tell you what's happening with it. I'd call, just for peace of mind.

    Good luck

Call made and confirmed that the new retention certificate is on it's way...... But still not showing as funds gone from my account yet. Glad I managed to talk to someone.

    For future info:

    - Retention renewal take up to 21 days as stated on the renewal reminder form.

    - And if it had gone missing in post/not arrived by due date you would not lose the plate. You would simply need to resubmit the application (if lost in post) with a letter explaining. people go years forgetting to renew them (When I worked at DVLA max I had by one customer was 12 yrs!) and you simply get asked to sent missing yr/s payments and letter.

The wording of the renewal is such that it reads as though as soon as you forget to renew your right to retain the plate it reverts to the DVLA.

The option is there in theory for DVLA to take the plate back, but they won't as plates earn a lot of money for them!

DVLA do not re-sell plates so once a number has been issued they cannot do anything with it so would not be profitable to void the plate.
