Pregnant wife being made redundant

Hi all,

Unfortunately my 6 months pregnant wife is being made redundant which isn't the best timing!

I was hoping some people on here might be able to help. Firstly , will she be able to claim any jobseekers allowance - i realise that she won't be able to whilst she is being paid maternity leave, but for the time before and after will she be able to?

Also, do we need to tell the mortgage company as we are now down to one wage? I don't want them on our backs as well!

Thanks in advance for any help,

RD

has she looked into the process of the redundancies...ie the criteria for the company selecting who to make redunant to ensure that she was not chosen unfiarly because she was pregnant? not saying she was but worth checking as she some protection against this if it were to occur, cant help with your other quesions I am afraid, perhaps citizens advice may help?

Your mortgage company don't need to know, unless you have difficulty meeting the repayments. If you can manage on one salary, there's no need to tell them.

  • Thanks for your responses. We've looked into the redunancy process and whilst we suspect that the overriding factor for her being chosen was her pregnancy, they on the face of it have done everything correctly.

DFC - thanks, thats a weight of our mind knowing we won;t get hassle as we can just about afford to survive on one salary for a while.

reddevilled - do you have a mortgage protection insurance? You may find that it will kick in if she's made redundant... I would certainly check to see if you can get your policy to pay your mortgage instead of struggling :)

perhaps it nay be worth pursuing the pregnancy/redunacy thing .. as to most it would seem very suspect ..

I agree, and we are. We have taken advice and know at the least what we should be able to get financially and will fight for that. But she doesn't now want to work for them anymore as she feels quite badly treated, and obviously with a baby on its way that is the main focus.

yes i understand that reddevilled ., wills she still get maternity pay now thought ? when was she due to go on leave ,,

make sure you apply for jsa asap as they seem unsuprisingly to have quite a hefty backlog they will tell her on phone wether she can recieve it or not

Yes they will pay her statutory maternity pay, however they are currently saying they will not pay the enhanced maternity package.

Thanks for the tip on applying for JSA, I'll get her onto that.

I would definately kick up a fuss about the selection if you think this is suspect.

I work in HR and making those on Maternity redundant is generally a high risk area. Disputes re these are a scary thing for companies to deal with as the costs of losing can be high. I have thrown money at individuals to resolve things quickly in the past.

Make sure your wife appeals the redundancy as the first step however - you need to go through the internal process before you potentially get the lawyers involved otherwise you damage your case.
