You would be in the wrong line of work if you heard this and you didn't care. The fact that you feel this way, though painful, says that you are in exactly the right line of work and they (we) are lucky to have you.

Sorry, reading that makes me think how tactless I am. It's horrible when one of your students dies and I was remembering one of mine today, and crying over her, though 8 years ago.
