I could be wrong, but I had the same smell a couple years ago, and it smells exactly how you have described, and it is urine from either a mouse or a rat, its difficult to describe, but it is very strong, and smells as though something is rotten, but the smell comes and goes.
If it is a dead Rodent, then the smell is a bit different, again its very hard to describe, but the smell lasts constantly for about 10-14 days.

It was horrible, and very embarressing, specially if you have visitors, as you dont want to admit you have a rodent running around or dead.
Luckily, we have the problem sorted now, its a smell I will always recognise, as I had to live with it for a while till we found out what it was.:sad:

the smell is def there all the time, and isnt a rotten smell IYSWIM. I have had a cat previously, and this def smells like the cat litter needs changing!

guess i should add mousetraps to the airfreshners!
