Over the past two days, i have noticed an awful smell in my house, esp strong in the bathroom and in a corner in the living room - it smells like cat wee
I dont have a cat, and the previous tenant lived here for a few years, and she didnt have a cat either - is there anything that i should be thinking of that could cause this smell, and what can i do to get rid/disguise it?
I have a tenancy inspection tom, and i am already dreading it, without having to worry about iffy smells!

i use a lemon spray cleaner from tesco (for the bathroom) - can't remember the name of it and when i use it with their sponge cloths it makes a horrible smell on the cloth a few days later - have you checked that it isn't a cloth in the bathroom - i realise that doesn't account for the smell in the living roomThe mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work unless it’s open.:o

Could it be a deceased mouse in the house?0

Is the water level correct in the toilet pan?
A low water level or a disturbed joint will allow fumes from the drains, and they are foul.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
I had a weird nasty smell yesterday - Im still not sure what it was but just blitzed the kitchen and fridge and its gone now.0

We get that sometimes when a fox or cat sprays near the air brick. The smell wafts through the room but is hard to pin point. I use clear dettol anti bacterial spray on the outside of the house. This seems to kill the smell.
Good luck

thanks guys - i am despartely hoping it isnt a mouse!!!
I will spray the outside of the (downstairs) bathroom with dettol, the only thing i can think of is that the corner where it is the plaster is coming away - inspector has said it is a little damp and they are invesigating further. Could that be it? It is only mild there though - it is way worse in the bathroom!
Am overdosing on airfreshners, so will try the dettol, lemon etc. anything i can get my hands on!
thanks again0 -

ah, now i think about it, the council have done some work to fix the outside bathroom drain - smell has appeared since then. Not sure how it would go to sitting room though? Will it settle eventually?0 -
