when we were in turkey 2006 & 2007 we found that we seemed to get better deals at markets, etc if we paid in £s they seemed to really want the £s, think they got better exchange or something at banks, also you know exactly what you are paying. Not sure if this is still the case or not anymore as that was couple of years ago but we always used £s when we were buying our market tat. lol
I personally wouldn't be happy using a cash machine as a couple of times we seen people having problems, not sure what happened but think the machines were dodgy/tampered with, but this was outside the main/tourist area.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am no good at quick calculation so if I did the same using Euros and GBPs I'd most likely than not be ripped off!! :(
  • I went to Turkey last July and I took £200 in turkish lira and £800 in english banknotes, most places accept £, when I did pay in lira I felt I was ripped off once I actually worked it out later. I'm going back there in 6 weeks and i'll be taking £100 worth of lira and the rest in £ this time. It's really only taxis & buses that request lira.

Just take £ cash with a little exchanged before you go. No need to do anything else if your room has a safe.
This way you get the best exchange rate (locally with cash) and don't have to pay high fees every time you use a cash machine or exchange a travellers cheque.

Off to Marmaris on Monday. I notice the exchange rate has jumped a bit over here. Can get 2.36@ Travelex.
Does anyone know roughly what the rate is in the resort at the moment?

Check out the currency data on the bbc website as they are closer to the bulk rates that the banks use which is similar to the exchange rate that you will get out there. Remember that the rate can change a few times in a day.

Rate today is 2.43 turkish lira to the british pound.
I am in Turkey & suggest you exchange some money in the uk to Turkish Lira & bring the rest in gbp to change over here.
As said before as long as you keep your money in the hotel safe it will be ok.

  • I was in Istanbul a few weeks back and used my Caxton FX card - the Global Traveller one. No ATM fees and a spiffing rate of exchange - recommend you get one of these.
