Hi, i'm looking for a bit of advice if someone can help. I've been given the wonderful task of helping the mother in law with her problems. Can't do IVA - not enough spare cash so have been advised to do reduced mortgage payments and pay £1 to creditors for the time being. The house is up for sale and will be approx £10k in negative equity with the penalty of the mortgage.

Hi rachel - first of all, there is no reason why you should have to sort out your mother in law's problems on your own. You, or she, should be talking to one of the Debt Counselling Charities: The above charities (there are others) have been fully endorsed by this site - they will give you/her professional and unbiased advice and the best part is - it won't cost you a penny.

Please avoid any fee charging 'Debt Management Company'.

And of course you can stop direct debits.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.
