Hi rachel - first of all, there is no reason why you should have to sort out your mother in law's problems on your own. You, or she, should be talking to one of the Debt Counselling Charities:

• CCCS - http://www.cccs.co.uk/ - tel 0800 138 1111
• A Debt Adviser at your local CAB

The above charities (there are others) have been fully endorsed by this site - they will give you/her professional and unbiased advice and the best part is - it won't cost you a penny.

Please avoid any fee charging 'Debt Management Company'.

And of course you can stop direct debits.
