Great! Sorry but what do you mean 'put the filters out of the BT socket, re-set the thing'? Do you mean, filters are now plugged straight inot the BT sockets?
I think that's exactly what he means.

If you are out of contract with Sky you can leave the box unplugged, but if it in 1st 12 months of contract then you are required by Sky to have it plugged in.
Aren't these the same people whose wiring caused him to spend £160 on support charges? I know we can all blame Orange but, to be fair, it's not their fault someone came along and hard-wired a box direct from the main BT connection in the property that meant you couldn't put an ADSL filter in or that wasn't wired properly.

I ran a sky box without a phone connection for about 2 years. As you say, you're meant to have it connected, (and you can't book TV on demand stuff and so on), but my view has always been that you're their customer... not the other way around.

The belligerence of old age I suppose ;)

Maybe they've changed their system so you have to have it connected permanently now bit I'd be very surprised if that's the case.

Codger-no it doesn't have to be permanently connected, but it does for the first 12 months under the contract terms-unless you pay about £25 fee to opt out.
I agree Sky must take some blame here-but remember it was Orange who failed to even ask the OP about his filters. But then at 50p per min for their support, what interest do they have in solving problems quickly?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

'Not a huge amount', is the simple answer I suppose. :(
