By this do you mean the processor ? and what memory should i be looking for ? thanks0 -
I know others are recommending Dell's but i'm not keen on them after the appalling customer service I suffered over christmas when I ordered an Inspiron 6000 laptop from them. The Acer in Hillfly's post on page 1 is a nice spec although I've heard varying reports on their build quality although have no experience of them myself.
Personally i'd recommend a Fujitsu Siemens as I have one myself. Bought from Staples for £549, its a Centrino 1.6ghz, 512MB ram, 80GB hard drive, 15" TFT screen. A friend of mine just bought exactly the same laptop from Staples and haggled in a free wireless mouse AND a free wireless router, all for £549!
You want to be looking for 512MB ram minimum, these machines with 256MB really are very slow (I know, I had one!) and a 1.5ghz processor or above would be ideal. As I said before, a Centrino or Turion based laptop would be my personal choice as the battery life is a lot better on these due to the way they have been designed. We get over 4 hours on battery out of our Centrino based Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro v2040. Don't bother with the Staples website though, its a waste of time.He huihuinga taangata he pukenga whakaaro – A meeting of people; a wellspring of ideas (Maori proverb)0 -
The Acer build seems pretty good although the keyboard is a little flimsy.
Another good option if you can be bothered to get it is to get a Virgin credit card. Use this to buy vouchers for comet at 13% discount in the virgin members shop. You could then get an Acer 3613wlmi for £390 which is a good price and an ok spec machine.
I'm in the process of doing exactly this for my parents who want a basic surfing machine with a DVD writer and built in wireless.
