hi
i have a carpet some 8 months old from a reputable local dealer who the family have used for a good few years May i point out that it was of supposed good quality i complained to the carpet shop about two lines down a 3 foot length of the carpet who organised an independent assesment on behalf of the manufactures. The assesor told me that there was a fault with it. i have since been sent a letter from the dealer saying that the manufacturer is offering a " gesture of goodwill" £150 in full settlement without prejudice to be valid upto 28 days I am not at all happy the fault is in an area that has no foot traffic so is surely a manufactured fault . How do i stand , i just dont know what to do about answering the letter or which direction best to follow. regards Beatrice

Personally I would expect the shop to sort this out for you - and I'd want a replacement ! Why should you put up with an obvious flaw (which has been identified as a fault by an assessor) - you've paid for a perfect carpet and thats what you should get !
Something simialr happened to a work colleague a while back and the store faffed about a bit but finally relaid a new carpet. Presumably the store then tried to get a refund from the manufacturer - but, I'm sorry, thats their problem not yours.
I also had a problem with a carpet newly laid all through the hall, stairs and landing at my old house. Shortly after laying it, it was very obvious that there was a distinct clour change halfway along the landing. The store insisted that there was often a colour change part way along rolls of carpet and said I'd have to put up with it ! I told them they were talking a load of old codswallap and asked if they'd like to explain their excuse in a Small Claims Hearing - they reluctantly agreed to either replace the carpet along the whole landing or give me a significant discount. I agreed to the discount, bought a nice rug and put that down over the flaw. (and still had some money left). I wouldn't have accepted that if the flaw had been in an obvious place in the living room etc.
Stick your heels in and sthe store sorts it PDQ.ELITE 5:2

thanks for the reply. i personally want the carpet up and replaced . it is not what i paid for. It is no excuse but it it is a lot of hard earned money for something that is "flawed"
i will get in touch with the shop . You have at least given me some confidence as to what i should do and say regards beatrice0 -
And if you get any trouble with getting a new carpet get in touch with Trading standards ASAP.0

i will, . i forgot to mention it is a large lounge carpet so the "tram lines" are "on view"
regards beatrice0 -
Replace only.

The tramlines you describe were on my carpet when it was laid 3 weeks ago. I thought it was strange, but left it and now they've comepletely disappeared. Hold on to the cheque for a while till you've vacuumed a few times, they might go away like mine did. It might have been something to do with the way it's been stored or shipped.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

i have taken advice from here and been succesful in getting my money back on a faulty carpet . The only point is the shop i bnought the carpet from will not repay the fitting costs that i paid for for the damaged carpet it is only £80 but i reckon i should get that back from the retailer or manufacturer any thoughts or advice
regards Beatrice0 -
I would have thought you are entitled to the charge back as you should be in a position before you started not worse off, only thing is you have had it 8 months.0

the independent assessor THEY sent has said the carpet is faulty
DO NOT accept £150 as a "gesture of goodwill"
you are LEGALLY entitled to a refund or replacement0
