My car was reg'd new on the 26th Feb 2003 I think it needs an MOT, the screen is cracked and cannot be replaced until Tuesday, can I still drive the car if I am waiting for a screen? Is there a 2 week overlap as in car tax?
Any help would be appreciated.

cars need to be MOT'd when 3 years old, to drive it without is committing an offence,it will not pass MOT with a crack in the windsceen, no overlap on MOT or tax, it is an offence to drive a car without displaying a valid tax discDon`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
I thought you had a few days over on tax?"YOU WANT THE CASH? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE CASH"0

There seems to be a lot of dispute over this, but you do need to pay the tax back to the end of the previous month, however there is a different offence of not DISPLAYING a valid tax disc, which means " a few days over" you are committing an offence.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
It won't fail on the MOT if the crack is not in the drivers view. Obviously something to consider.0

I think if it is the area that the wipers clean and over a certain length it is an MOT fail. You will be OK for not having the tax so long as you don't get stopped by the police or a traffic warden. What I mean is that they now fine you based on records in a database, it's an automatic system but it does not send out fines after one day, I think it is 3 or 4 weeks. But it is illegal not to have a MOT, what happens if someone crashes into you?
I would keep the car in the garage until you take it for the new windscreen. If you have an MOT booked you can drive legally to the MOT and if it fails to somewhere for a repair so long as the car is not dangerous.0 -
Sorry, but this is the situation. If you drive any car on the road without an MOT or TAX then you are not only driving illegaly but you are also not insured. The only exception to this rule is if you have a taxed car that has failed it's MOT and is being driven to/back from the MOT station within twenty four hours. I only know because I fell foul of this to Nottinghamshire Constabulary. Another bonus was that they attempted prosecution for fraud as the tax disc was out of date! Luckily that fell through! (Although I was also arrested under suspicion of shoplifting a 42" rear projection television.....OH and arrested by the Anti Terrorist squad, neither of which came to anything!!!!!) But then I am ginger........'Just because its on the internet don't believe it 100%'. Abraham Lincoln.

the following is taken from HERE
So ALL cracks are a fail!
MOT requirements for winscreens
The drivers view must not be impaired in anyway, so out go the fluffy dice and baby on board stickers, at least for the test! The windscreen must be free of cracks and damage, although small stone chips can be ignored as long as they are not obscuring the driver's field of view. Area 'A' (see diagram) is the 'critical' area. Within this area any chip or crack that obscures the driver's view has to be below a maximum diameter of 10mm.
The remaining area that is of concern for the MOT tester is that which the wipers sweep across. Within this region the cracks and spots must not exceed a diameter of 40mm Interior and externals mirrors must be securely and correctly fitted, and must be there if fitted as standard. They should not be damaged as to hinder rearward vision and must operate correctly. Items such as windscreen wipers, which should be of the correct size, must be able to effectively clean the windscreen and the rubber strips should be free of rips and tears.
The washer jets should be free flowing and able to squirt efficiently onto the windscreen. Make sure that you top all water reservoirs up. An empty washer bottle will cause a fail.

Too late now, but you can get the MOT done up to a month before it is needed and provided you take the old MOT certificate (or V5 if it is the first MOT), then the MOT starts on the old expiry date. That way if anything needs doing you have a month to get it fixed.
